The myths of globalization - thinking the limits of world-forming

2015

Another world is possible" is perhaps the most thought-provoking and inspirational expressions of our time. It is a genuine political claim but at the same time the most critical and fundamental inquiry into our contemporary global condition. The question is, however: in what sense? In his PhD dissertation, The Myths of Globalization -Thinking the Limits of World-Forming, Pieter Meurs employs the work of contemporary continental philosophers (Jean-Luc Nancy and Martin Heidegger) to philosophically address this question. Pieter Meurs holds a master degree in Informal Educational Sciences and a master and doctoral degree in Philosophy and Moral Sciences (VUB). He has presented and published papers on critical theory, political philosophy, (post-)phenomenology and has written on Merleau-Ponty and Jean-Luc Nancy. He is a lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Faculty of Psychology and Educational sciences and at

The Ontology of Globalization: The Loss of Worlds in the Face of Rising a Uniform Globe

2021

Up until Kant’s critical philosophy, it was not easy to speak of the “world” itself as distinct from “nature”. After Kant, the world began to be considered from a historical perspective. Therefore, the world came to be considered as historical rather than natural, which is why it is possible to speak of different worlds in the history of thought. However, globalization more and more drives these different worlds into a uniform historical globe. In this paper, I consider the question of globalization as a passage “from multiple historical worlds to a uniform historical globe”. By analyzing the passages from “nature” to the “world” and from the “world” to the “globe,” I focus on how the idea of “dwelling in the world” and of “saving the earth” has increasingly transformed into the idea of “dominating the world” and of “owning the earth”.

The Dilemmas of Globalization

Language, individual & society, 2016

Globalization is one of the most important contemporary megatrends. Paradoxically, it is still not fully known. In my talk I will show that “globalization” is an ambiguous term. I want to highlight three aspects of globalization: economic, political and cultural. The assessment of globalization in these aspects is not unambiguous because globalization itself is not isomorphic. Thus in the context of globalization there is a place both: for a clash of civilizations and for their homogenization; for ecological disasters and for extraordinary actions saving the environment; for the triumph of liberalism and free market capitalism and for counter-reactions to them; for the stability of nation states and for the emergence of powerful, private, non-state agents.

Globalization – Notions, Culture and Critique

Globalization is referred to as the process of interchange of people and ideas across boundaries. It may affect the social, cultural and economic lives but it does transcend into the international political system of the states. It is globalization that has led to the emergence of the Non – State actors both good and bad such as the Multi-National Companies and has in some ways also influenced the way we live, what we choose and the development of our country as it leads to generation of employment opportunities and arouses competition. The present research paper tries to understand the theoretical considerations about globalization and the perception of the masses about the process of globalization. The paper also intends to answer the question if the phenomenon of Globalization has in any form led to the making the native culture dilute. How it is seen by the natives of the country and what are the drawbacks of this phenomenon

THE CONCEPT AND CHARACTERISTICS OF GLOBALIZATION IN THE VIEW OF PHILOSOPHY

IJARW, 2021

The concept of globalization and its characteristics is an issue that attracts the attention of many researchers. At the same time, the controversy surrounding this issue is still ongoing without reaching a complete consensus among scholars. However, there are still common points that show the nature of globalization. The following article contributes to clarifying this trend.

What is globalization? The definitional issue - again

2002

Knowledge of globalization is substantially a function of how the concept is defined. After tracing the history of 'global' vocabulary, this paper suggests several principles that should inform the way globality (the condition) and globalization (the trend) are defined. On this basis four common conceptions of the term are rejected in favour of a fifth that identifies globalization as the spread of transplanetary -and in recent times more particularly supraterritorial -connections between people. Half a dozen qualifications are incorporated into this definition to distinguish it from globalist exaggerations. 4 conceptualization of globalization as the spread of transplanetary and, in present times more specifically, supraterritorial social relations.
