Introduction Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the sixth largest oil producing country in the world. It is also number two in terms of high quality liquefied natural gas (World Bank, 2005).Nigeria is also blessed with abundant natural and human resources. It is also on record that Nigerian military is one of the most formidable in Africa. However, the sad paradox is that in spite of these large blessings, the country has been known for unprecedented ethno religious violence which has occurred in different parts of the country but with specific dominance in the northern parts of Nigeria. The spate of the ethno religious violence should be a matter of deep concern to researchers, guidance counselors and peace lovers all over the country. Violence has assumed a horrendous dimension with colossal consequences on education and human life that if nothing is done, then soonest Nigerians will face self – destruction, self-annihilation and extinction. Charles; Andeshi, and Daniel (2014) defined ethno-religious Violence as a state of affairs in which the relationship between members of one ethnic or religious group and another of such group in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society is characterized by lack of cordiality, mutual suspicion, fear, and a tendency towards violent confrontation. Almajiri System of Education and the Emergence of Religious Extremists in Nigeria

Journal of Educational and Social Research, 2020

This paper describes Almajiri system of education and the emergence of religious extremists in Nigeria. Almajiri system of education being a traditional and non-formal system of education which derived its curriculum from the Holy Qu'ran and subjects its learners or pupils to roam about the streets begging for alms, food, and render menial labour to the teachers known as Mallams as a means of survival, is found majorly in the northern parts of Nigeria which later spread to other parts of the country and the world with devastating effects to the country's security apparatus as well as our cooperate existence as one indivisible entity. Consequently, these innocent children with little or no parental backgrounds are left to their fate constituting child labour, child abuse, child neglect , street hawking and other social vices while others join bad groups in carrying out crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, suicide bombings etc. This negates the contribution of education to nation building. The conceptual clarifications, historical perspectives, some factors affecting Almajiri system of education as well as suggestions and recommendations were extensively outlined.

INTEGRATING EDUCATIONAL, RELIGIOUS, AND EThNiC VALUES FOR NATIONAL INTEREST: A STRATEGY FOR CURBING SOCIAL VIOLENCE IN NIGERIA. A PAPER PRESENTED BY

One would have been made to believe that the experience of/he civil war that threatened the unity of thnation,Nigeria would have been lessons for all citizens Uthe society would continue to he a united nation. But the recent spate of anti-social activities leading to outright social violence point to blank reminiscence of those gloomy days'. New forms of social violence that are alien to our culture and society are on the increas'e. Our unity, security, peace and survival as a nation is threatened. Yet there is an unpredictable expansion of our education sector and a proljflc growth and development of religious groups which in the ordinary sense should be agents ofpeacefiel coexistence. What then is wrong? This paper argues that there is a missing link between education, ethnicity, politics and religious values and ideals. Ethnocentric interests are prided above national unsty aucation and rehgzon1nzghly politicized )therebyleadzng to clash of ideologies and thus social violence. It is the opinion of these writers that since education cannot be outrightly separated from religious, cultural and political interest, a synthetic integration of the virtues of these institutions for national interest will be strategic for curbing social violence in Nigeria. Among other recommendations, this paper suggests national interethnic and inter religious conferences to be organized quarterly every year for values assimilation and orientation as a measure for curbing social violence. It

RELIGIOUS IMPERATIVES AS A PANACEA TO CRIME AND VIOLENCE AMONG YOUTHS IN NIGERIA Introduction

t is an undeniable fact that Nigeria as a nation is witnessing a paradigm shift as far as the issue of crime is concerned. Nigeria is now ranking among the terrorists nations and this calls to question the issue of security in the nation. The different militant groups and the recent Boko Haram insurgence is a major challenge the country is facing today. Incidentally, those perpetrating these dastardly acts are youths and this is why the paper focuses on Youth involvement in crimes. Youth involvement in various crimes is fast assuming an alarming rate. Many factors have been said to be responsible for or influence the high incidence of crime among the youths. They include the following which will be systematically considered-Personal, Family/Parents factors, School based/Education factors, Socio-Economic and Political factors, Religious, peer Influence, Media and Career related factors. The paper however, posit that religion is vital in curbing most, if not all, of the excesses exhibited by the youths by providing a proactive approach to helping the youths to overcome the violent behaviours they exhibit. In this regard, religion becomes a veritable tool in solving the problem of crimes as the Holy writs negate these acts among the youths.

THE ROLES OF EDUCATION IN THE PREVENTION OF VIOLENT RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM IN NIGERIA.

Ife Educrat Journal, 2019

Violent Religious Extremism has become a grave menace facing Nigeria, especially, the Northern region of the country. It upsets the security, well-being and formality of citizens living in both rural and urban areas of countries, as well as their serene and sustainable ways of life. It also poses grave challenges to human rights. From 2001 till date, the Nigerian government alone has spent billions of dollars in their attempt to fight terrorism. But it is becoming clearer that earmarking funds to fortify security dealings is inadequate to protect everyone from terrorist attacks perpetrated by violent religious extremist individuals. Hence, the role of Education in security measures cannot be underestimated. Keywords: terrorism, Education, Nigeria.

THE INFLUENCE OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION IN CURBING RELIGIOUS CONFLICTS AND TERRORISM IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

WUKARI INTERNATIONAL STUDIES JOURNAL, VOL 7 (5), 2023 , 2023

The persistent religious conflicts and terrorism in Northern Nigeria have given peculiar Nigerians a cause for deep concern in recent times. The imminent of religious conflict is not really recent; it has been in the society for a long time. At least in the eyes of the general public, the modern revival of religion appears to be closely linked to the resurgence of violent acts that are justified by religion. Thus, the reasoning goes, it is imperative to reduce, neutralize, or completely eradicate religion's influence on public life. But this may not be outrightly true a position, as it cannot be admitted realistic with a religious man. People wonder why religion which used to be the cohesive factor and core of national unity, peaceful coexistence and national development, has become a tool for political manipulation, violence, destruction of lives and properties in Nigeria in contemporary times. There is a loss of values and effective Christian Education could really curb religious conflict and terrorism in the northern Nigeria and Christian Religious Education curriculum which contains Character formation would be an instrument to educate and give an orientation that enhances curbing conflicts and terrorism.

TRANSFORMING ROLE OF EDUCATION: A SINE QUA NON FOR MITIGATING AGAINST MILITANCY AND INSURGENCY IN NIGERIA

Societies have been transformed from one stage/level of development to the other by virtue of education. European countries such as Britain, France, Germany etc have metamorphosed over the years as a result of the foresight which they had. Europe today is viewed as the most developed continent of the world, when certain development indices are put into consideration. The renaissance (which started in Italy and spread like wild fire into other parts of Europe) and the Age of Enlightenment in Europe and the American colonies can be said to have been the mothers of the industrial revolution in the same clime. In a nutshell it was a period when education, knowledge acquisition and a radical understanding of the society in which the individual lived in was given its pride of place. The two can be described as Education. Education is a catalyst for the transformation of any society, including Nigeria. This is why it has become an alternative for mitigating against many societal ills such as militancy, insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping, vandalism of oil pipelines etc. The role of educators therefore cannot be over-emphasised. Relying largely on secondary data, the paper looked into the transforming role of education as a sine qua non for mitigating against militancy and insurgency in Nigeria. With failed attempts through the use of force in preventing conflicts and violence arising from the activities of these belligerent groups, an alternative is needed.

The Place of Religion in Education: A Contemporary Nigerian Perspective

Journal of Cultural and Religious Studies, 2016

The Nigerian society has been plagued by persistent religious conflicts alongside the problem of insecurity for some time now. This is not a new development, but it has worsened since the last five years with the emergence of the Boko Haram Islamic group. This group claims to be responsible for most violent activities in the northern part of the country for the past few years. Judging from the nature of their activities, Boko Haram, an Arabic phrase which literally means that "western education is forbidden", is among other factors, largely rooted in religious intolerance. The challenges posed by this group since 2010 have defied all logic and rationality, leaving Nigerians with deep concerns for the unity of their country in the present era. Why has religion, albeit a formidable unifying element, become an instrument of various kinds of menace, destruction of lives and properties? It appears to have even caused many to wonder about the quality of education and expertise of the Nigerian polity and governance. It must also be noted that most of these problems with Boko Haram have their roots in the northern part of the country which is predominantly Islamic in religion. Religion has been awfully misrepresented and used as an excuse for all kinds of evil. This paper examines the place of religion in education from the perspective of the contemporary Nigerian society. It also explores how religion can still be used as a paradigm for restoring the sanctity and dignity of education, promote its morality and actualize its objectives in the society. The paper furthermore summons religious leaders to devise significant ways, such as interfaith dialogues and activities to enhance a sustained education in the country.
