Phase Compactons in Chains of Dispersively Coupled Oscillators (original) (raw)

Phase compactons

Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 2006

We study the phase dynamics of a chain of autonomous, self-sustained, dispersively coupled oscillators. In the quasicontinuum limit the basic discrete model reduces to a Korteveg-de Vries-like equation, but with a nonlinear dispersion. The system supports compactons -solitary waves with a compact support -and kovatons -compact formations of glued together kink-antikink pairs that propagate with a unique speed, but may assume an arbitrary width. We demonstrate that lattice solitary waves, though not exactly compact, have tails which decay at a superexponential rate. They are robust and collide nearly elastically and together with wave sources are the building blocks of the dynamics that emerges from typical initial conditions. In finite lattices, after a long time, the dynamics becomes chaotic. Numerical studies of the complex Ginzburg-Landau lattice show that the non-dispersive coupling causes a damping and deceleration, or growth and acceleration, of compactons. A simple perturbation method is applied to study these effects.

Boundary effects on the dynamics of chains of coupled oscillators

Nonlinearity, 2009

We study the dynamics of a chain of coupled particles subjected to a restoring force (Klein-Gordon lattice) in the cases of either periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions. Precisely, we prove that, when the initial data are of small amplitude and have long wavelength, the main part of the solution is interpolated by a solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which in turn has the property that its Fourier coefficients decay exponentially. The first order correction to the solution has Fourier coefficients that decay exponentially in the periodic case, but only as a power in the Dirichlet case. In particular our result allows one to explain the numerical computations of the paper [BMP07].

Breathers in oscillator chains with Hertzian interactions

Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 2013

We prove nonexistence of breathers (spatially localized and time-periodic oscillations) for a class of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices representing an uncompressed chain of beads interacting via Hertz's contact forces. We then consider the setting in which an additional on-site potential is present, motivated by the Newton's cradle under the effect of gravity. Using both direct numerical computations and a simplified asymptotic model of the oscillator chain, the so-called discrete p-Schrödinger (DpS) equation, we show the existence of discrete breathers and study their spectral properties and mobility. Due to the fully nonlinear character of Hertzian interactions, breathers are found to be much more localized than in classical nonlinear lattices and their motion occurs with less dispersion. In addition, we study numerically the excitation of a traveling breather after an impact at one end of a semi-infinite chain. This case is well described by the DpS equation when local oscillations are faster than binary collisions, a situation occuring e.g. in chains of stiff cantilevers decorated by spherical beads. When a hard anharmonic part is added to the local potential, a new type of traveling breather emerges, showing spontaneous direction-reversing in a spatially homogeneous system. Finally, the interaction of a moving breather with a point defect is also considered in the cradle system. Almost total breather reflections are observed at sufficiently high defect sizes, suggesting potential applications of such systems as shock wave reflectors.

Quasiregular Concentric Waves in Heterogeneous Lattices of Coupled Oscillators

Physical Review Letters, 2005

We study the pattern formation in a lattice of coupled phase oscillators with quenched disorder. In the synchronized regime concentric waves can arise, which are induced and increase in regularity by the disorder of the system. Maximal regularity is found at the edge of the synchronization regime. The emergence of the concentric waves is related to the symmetry breaking of the interaction function. An explanation of the numerically observed phenomena is given in a one-dimensional chain of coupled phase oscillators. Scaling properties, describing the target patterns are obtained.

The dynamics of complex-amplitude norm-preserving lattices of coupled oscillators

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2004

We introduce a class of models composed by lattices of coupled complex-amplitude oscillators which preserve the norm. These models are particularly well adapted to investigate phenomena described by the nonlinear Schr odinger equation. The coupling between oscillators is parameterized by the mass, while their local dynamics is illustrated for two area-preserving maps: one obtained from the exact local solution of the Schr odinger equation, the other obtained from its Crank-Nicholson discretization. In both cases, we determine all periodic orbits and show how to detect artifacts introduced by the discretization.

Flat bands and compactons in mechanical lattices

Physical Review E, 2017

Local configurational symmetry in lattice structures may give rise to stationary, compact solutions, even in the absence of disorder and nonlinearity. These compact solutions are related to the existence of flat dispersion curves (bands). Nonlinearity can destabilize such compactons. One common flat-band-generating system is the one-dimensional cross-stitch model, in which compactons were shown to exist for the photonic lattice with Kerr nonlinearity. The compactons exist there already in the linear regime and are not generally destructed by that nonlinearity. Smooth nonlinearity of this kind does not permit performing complete stability analysis for this chain. We consider a discrete mechanical system with flat dispersion bands, in which the nonlinearity exists due to impact constraints. In this case, one can use the concept of the saltation matrix for the analytic construction of the monodromy matrix. Besides, we consider a smooth nonlinear lattice with linearly connected massless boxes, each containing two symmetric anharmonic oscillators. In this model, the flat bands and discrete compactons also readily emerge. This system also permits performing comprehensive stability analysis, at least in the anti-continuum limit, due to the reduced number of degreesof-freedom. In both systems, there exist two types of localization. The first one is the complete localization, and the second one is the more common exponential localization. The latter type is associated with discrete breathers (DBs). Two principal mechanisms for the loss of stability are revealed. The first one is the possible internal instability of the symmetric and/or antisymmetric solution in the individual unit cell of the chain. One can interpret this instability pattern as internal resonance between the compacton and the DB. The other mechanism is global instability related to resonance of the stationary solution with the propagation frequencies. Different instability mechanisms lead to different bifurcations at the stability threshold.

Dynamics of mobile coupled phase oscillators

Physical Review E, 2013

We study the transient synchronization dynamics of locally coupled phase oscillators moving on a onedimensional lattice. Analysis of spatial phase correlation shows that mobility speeds up relaxation of spatial modes and leads to faster synchronization. We show that when mobility becomes sufficiently high, it does not allow spatial modes to form and the population of oscillators behaves like a mean-field system. Estimating the relaxation timescale of the longest spatial mode and comparing it with systems with long-range coupling, we reveal how mobility effectively extends the interaction range.

Oscillatory Instabilities of Standing Waves in One-Dimensional Nonlinear Lattices

Physical Review Letters, 2000

In one-dimensional anharmonic lattices, we construct nonlinear standing waves (SWs) reducing to harmonic SWs at small amplitude. For SWs with spatial periodicity incommensurate with the lattice period, a transition by breaking of analyticity versus wave amplitude is observed. As a consequence of the discreteness, oscillatory linear instabilities, persisting for arbitrarily small amplitude in infinite lattices, appear for all wave numbers Q fi 0, p. Incommensurate analytic SWs with jQj . p͞2 may however appear as "quasistable," as their instability growth rate is of higher order. 42.65.Sf, 45.05. + x, 63.20.Ry A well known and rather spectacular phenomenon occurring in many nonlinear media (e.g., fluids or optical waveguides) is the modulational (Benjamin-Feir) instability (MI), by which a traveling plane wave breaks up into a train of solitary waves (see, e.g., ). It is also well known that wave propagation in many continuous nonlinear media is well described by nonlinear Schrödingertype equations, where the solitary wave trains are described by spatially periodic and stable standing wave (SW) solutions, the so-called cnoidal envelope waves .

Dynamics of phase oscillators in the Kuramoto model with generalized frequency-weighted coupling

2016

We generalize the Kuramoto model for the synchronization transition of globally coupled phase oscillators to populations by incorporating an additional heterogeneity with the coupling strength, where each oscillator pair interacts with different coupling strength weighted by a genera; function of their natural frequency. The expression for the critical coupling can be straightforwardly extended to a generalized explicit formula analytically, and s self-consistency approach is developed to predict the stationary states in the thermodynamic limit. The landau damping effect is further revealed by means of the linear stability analysis and resonance poles theory above the critical threshold which turns to be far more generic. Furthermore, the dimensionality reduction technique of the Ott-Antonsen is implemented to capture the analytical description of relaxation dynamics of the steady states valid on a globally attracting manifold. Our theoretical analysis and numerical results are cons...

Standing wave instabilities in a chain of nonlinear coupled oscillators

Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena, 2002

We consider existence and stability properties of nonlinear spatially periodic or quasiperiodic standing waves (SWs) in one-dimensional lattices of coupled anharmonic oscillators. Specifically, we consider Klein-Gordon (KG) chains with either soft (e.g., Morse) or hard (e.g., quartic) on-site potentials, as well as discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) chains approximating the small-amplitude dynamics of KG chains with weak inter-site coupling. The SWs are constructed as exact timeperiodic multibreather solutions from the anticontinuous limit of uncoupled oscillators. In the validity regime of the DNLS approximation these solutions can be continued into the linear phonon band, where they merge into standard harmonic SWs. For SWs with incommensurate wave vectors, this continuation is associated with an inverse transition by breaking of analyticity. When the DNLS approximation is not valid, the continuation may be interrupted by bifurcations associated with resonances with higher harmonics of the SW. Concerning the stability, we identify one class of SWs which are always linearly stable close to the anticontinuous limit. However, approaching the linear limit all SWs with nontrivial wave vectors become unstable through oscillatory instabilities, persisting for arbitrarily small amplitudes in infinite lattices. Investigating the dynamics resulting from these instabilities, we find two qualitatively different regimes for wave vectors smaller than or larger than π/2, respectively. In one regime persisting breathers are found, while in the other regime the system rapidly thermalizes.
