Tradition and Innovation, Cochineal and Andean keros (original) (raw)

The study examines the historical significance and usage of cochineal as a textile dye in pre-Columbian and colonial Andes societies, particularly focusing on its application in keros. Through an analysis of pigment replication and sample testing, findings suggest that the use of cochineal as a lake pigment emerged in the early Spanish colonial period, influenced by Spanish recipes. The research highlights the complexity of colorant identification, challenging visual analysis as a reliable indicator and emphasizing the need for chemical analysis in understanding the historical use of colorants.
