Agitations for State Creation in Nigeria: A Study of Ekiti State (original) (raw)
This paper provides insight into the systematic evolution of Nigeria’s Federalism and the dynamics of State Creation in her federating structure. The scope of study is limited to the case study of the creation of Ekiti State, one of the 36 states in the Nigeria’s Federation. The paper identified the peculiarities and nature of Nigeria’s evolving federal system within the context of state creation and political alignment among the people and communities of Nigeria. Issues that fuel imbalances and political instability as well as desire for extensive political and local autonomy within the fragile Nigeria’s federal system suffice in articulating the tendencies and tensions embedded in developing her structural functionalism as an emerging African nation-state. The paper invariably contributes to the study of the dynamics of political development and alliances in the evolution and restructuring of post colonial African States. Keywords: Nigeria, Federalism, Ekiti, Ondo, marginalization, agitations, State creation, politics of development
