Design and implementation of real-time off-grid detection tool based on FNET/GridEye
2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition, 2014
Real-time situational awareness tools are of critical importance to power system operators, especially during emergencies. The availability of electric power has become a linchpin of most post disaster response efforts as it is the primary dependency for public and private sector services, as well as individuals. Knowledge of the scope and extent of facilities impacted, as well as the duration of their dependence on backup power, enables emergency response officials to plan for contingencies and provide better overall response. Based on real-time data acquired by Frequency Disturbance Recorders (FDRs) deployed in the North American power grid, a real-time detection method is proposed. This method monitors critical electrical loads and detects the transition of these loads from an on-grid state, where the loads are fed by the power grid to an off-grid state, where the loads are fed by an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) or a local backup generation system. The details of the proposed detection algorithm are presented, and some case studies and off-grid detection scenarios are also provided to verify the effectiveness and robustness. Meanwhile, how to implement the detection tool in real-time environment and its achievements in detecting off-grid situations are discussed in this paper.
Taming the electric grid Continuous improvement of wide-area monitoring for enhanced grid stability
2008
Several catastrophic power blackouts during the last decade have exposed a need for early warning systems in the transmission system control centers. Network ManagerTM, ABB’s solution for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Energy Management Systems (EMS) has, since 2008, offered wide-area monitoring and a new set of tools to get full control of the grid, even when it extends over thousands of kilometers.
Issues and applications of real-time data from off-grid electrical systems
2016 IEEE PES PowerAfrica, 2016
Off-grid systems are a pathway to electrification for millions of people located far from the existing grid. However, the premature failure and underutilization of these systems are difficult to prevent. Advances in data acquisition hardware, the expansion of cellular communication networks and cloud-based solutions have made data collection, monitoring, archival and even remote interaction with off-grid systems a possibility. The co-installation of data acquisition hardware with off-grid systems is not a widespread practice, and use cases of the data have not been popularized. This paper discusses the technology, applications and considerations related to off-grid data acquisition and monitoring. Data from several off-grid systems in Sub-Saharan Africa are used to illustrate the applications.
Recent developments of FNET/GridEye — A situational awareness tool for smart grid
CSEE Journal of Power and Energy Systems, 2016
Wide-area monitoring systems (WAMS) are becoming increasingly vital for enhancing power grid operators' situational awareness capabilities. As a pilot WAMS that was initially deployed in 2003, the frequency monitoring network FNET/GridEye uses GPS-time-synchronized monitors called frequency disturbance recorders (FDRs) to capture dynamic grid behaviors. Over the past ten years, a large number of publications related to FNET/GridEye have been reported. In this paper, the most recent developments of FNET/GridEye sensors, data centers, and data analytics applications are reviewed. These works demonstrate that FNET/GridEye will become a costeffective situational awareness tool for the future smart grid.
Grid Awareness Under Normal Conditions and Cyber-Threats
Intelligent Integrated Energy Systems, 2018
The situational grid awareness is becoming increasingly important for power system operations due to smaller operational margins, wide range of uncertainties entailed by renewables and highly critical infrastructure failures due to potential cyber-attacks. In this chapter, we look at some of the state-of-the-art technologies to monitor events in a power system under normal operating condition, followed by detection algorithms for regular business risk events, such as faults and equipment failures, and finally, we look into methods for quantifying vulnerability of under the rare and men-orchestrated cyber-attacks. First, we outline an architecture of a central piece of today’s grid awareness system, Wide Area Monitoring, Protection and Control technology. Next, we review an event detection method used to identify and record faults and failures in the grid. Finally, we present a method for vulnerability assessment of grids under cyber-attacks.
Detection and Protection of Power Grid Synchronization Failure
There are several power generating units connected to grid such as hydro, thermal, solar, etc. to supply power to the load these generating units need to supply power according to the rules of L.D.C these rules involves maintaining voltage variation with in limit and also the frequency if any deviation from the acceptable range limit of the grid it is mandatory that the some feeder should automatically get disconnected from the grid which in termed as islanding, these prevent in large scale brownout or blackout of the grid power so it is preferable to have a system which can warn the grid in advance so that alternate arrangements are kept on standby to avoid complete grid failure.
POWER GRID SYNCHRONIZATION FAILURE DETECTION AND RECOVERY
As the power grid failure problems continue to persist in the country, need arises to make it more efficient and effective. This is a demonstration devised to provide such kind of a system that could detect the failure in synchronous working of the power grid in case any external supply source that is supplying to the grid is encountering any kind of abnormalities may be in current levels, voltage levels, temperature and oil level. There are various generation units that usually supply power to the grids such as thermal plants, solar plants, hydroelectric plants etc. All the generation units that connect to the grid have to obey the rules or standards laid down for the operation of a grid. These rules involve maintaining of voltage variation, current variation, oil-level variation and temperature variation within these specified limits. If there are any kind of abnormalities or deviations from the acceptable limits laid down by the grid, it then gets crucial that the particular feeding source should get automatically disconnected from the entire grid temporarily, this process is widely termed islanding. This would prevent large scale occurrences of events of black outs. Hence it would be beneficial and wise if we could have a system that would be so efficient that it could issue intimations about the potential variations in the arrangements and in addition provide the exact distance of the fault location on a feeder line from the base grid and keep the particular source temporarily on a standby basis while this process takes place. Variation of the system voltage should be around +-5% as per central electricity authority of India Regulations, 2010. This paper is an approach on devising out a system that helps the grid resolve problems related to black out situations hence making it a smart grid.
Detection of Power Grid Synchronization Failure by Sensing Bad Voltage and Frequency
This project developed to minimize the power grid synchronization failure and the main intention of this project is to detect the failure of power grid synchronization while sensing the voltage and frequency which are not in an acceptable range, and then stopping the power supply to the distribution system. The all the power generating unit such as thermal, hydro, wind, solar and so on connected to the power grid and all the unit follow the rules of the grid. According to the rules of the grid, these power generating units need to supply the power at permutable limits of the voltage and frequencies. Therefore, acceptable range of frequency and voltage is mandatory for the power grid. If any deviation from the acceptable limit of the grid it is mandatory that the same feeder should automatically get disconnected from the grid which by effect is termed as islanding. This prevents in large scale brown out or black out of the grid power. This system is based on the Atmega 16 family of microcontroller which monitor the under/over voltage and frequency of the grid by using the comparator based ZCD i.e. zero crossing detection circuit and display the deviation in frequency and voltage. The main frequency cannot be change, due to this we used a variable frequency generator frequency, whereas a standard variac is used to vary the input voltage to test the functioning of the project.
