Wind farm stability analysis in the presence of variable-speed generators
Energy, 2012
Variable-speed technologies have been adopted to improve the efficiency of electricity generation in wind farms. Among these technologies, doubly-fed induction generators have widely spread and their stability issues have been experienced and analysed. In recent years, permanent-magnet synchronous generators have been also exploited, connected to the grid through full-scale converters, ensuring high flexibility, reducing losses and weight. The presence of these technologies heightens the necessity of deeply investigating wind turbine behaviour under different disturbances. In this paper, a small-and large-disturbance stability analysis is carried out in order to compare dynamic characteristic of wind farm equipped with the aforementioned generation technologies. To this purpose, a detailed model of wind turbine, together with relevant control schemes, is adopted for each generator of a real-sized wind farm. The compliance of the plant with fault-ride-through requirements imposed by transmission system operator is also verified.
Dynamic stability of wind-turbine generators under widely varying loading conditions
International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems
The dynamic stability of a single wind-turbine generator, supplying an infinite bus through a transmission line, is considered under widely varying loading conditions. A linearized model of the system is developed and used in the analysis. Loading conditions are varied over a wide range and a parametric eigenvalue analysis is conducted. The system's dominant modes of oscillation are identified and displayed in the complex s-plane for the entire loading range considered. Several cases are examined and conclusions are drawn as to the effects of the system and control parameters on the dynamic stability of the wind-turbine generator. Results obtained from a digital simulation of the system, for pseudo-typical wind gusts, are also included for comparative purposes.
Transient Analysis for the Stability of Grid Connected Wind Turbine
When the wind power has been integrated to the power system then it poses instability and control issues. So, a thorough study has been needed to identify the potential problems and to develop measures to mitigate them. The presented system is able to maintain the system stability in case of varying voltage generation because of varying speed of wind turbine as well as capable to handle the fault over the system. To provide the stability over the system, the STATCOM based model has been presented in this work. The presented model has been developed in Mat Lab Simulink environment. This paper investigates the use of a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) along with wind farms for the purpose of stabilizing the grid voltage. The strategy focuses on a fundamental grid operational requirement to maintain proper voltages at the point Of common coupling by regulating voltage. Although integration of high levels of wind power into an existing transmission system does not require a major redesign, it necessitates additional control and compensating equipment to enable recovery from severe system disturbances. The obtained results show that the presented system is effective enough to provide the stability over the system.
STABILITY SIMULATION OF WIND TURBINE SYSTEMS
A simulation and digital computer modeling effort is described in which a wind turbinegenerator system is adapted for stability evaluation using a large scale transient stability computer program. Component models of the MOD-2 wind generator system are described and their digital model equations are provided. A versatile wind velocity model is described, which provides the capability of simulating a wide variety of wind variations, in addition to the usual network disturbances. Computed results obtained from runs of the enhanced stability program are provided that illustrate the wind turbine-generator system dynamic performance for changes in wind velocity.

The aim of this paper is to improve the transient stability of a wind turbine generation system (WTGS), so that it can respond to a disturbance or fault of the system from a normal operating condition and can return to a state where their operation is normal again. A comparison for transient stability augmentation capability between Induction Generator (IG) and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) has been explained. For this, three models have been presented, all of them having a total capacity of 6MVA. The models are: wind farm with IG alone, with both IG and PMSG and a wind farm with PMSG alone. It is seen that the transient stability of IG can be improved by including PMSG with IG. The simulation models have been prepared with the simulation tool of PSCAD/EMTDC.
Dynamic Modelling of Grid-Connected Variable-Speed Wind Turbines
Horizontal axis wind turbines can experience significant time varying aerodynamic loads, potentially causing adverse effect on structures, mechanical components, and power production. The needs for experimental procedure for investigating stability and dynamic response have increased as wind turbines become larger. For this reason, the design, operation and maintenance technology for large-scale wind turbines is getting more attention and importance. In this paper, a detailed study is implemented for the effect of mechanical design on the wind turbine performance and efficiency. The turbine performance is subjected to a real wind speed pattern by modeling the wind speed as a sum of harmonics with wide range frequencies. The turbine model includes the effect of the tower shadow and wind shear. Simulation results are presented to verify the wind turbine simulator performance.
Dynamic Modeling of Wind Turbines Based on Estimated Wind Speed under Turbulent Conditions

Large-scale wind turbines with a large blade radius rotates under fluctuating conditions depending on the blade position. The wind speed is maximum in the highest point when the blade in the upward position and minimum in the lowest point when the blade in the downward position. The spatial distribution of wind speed, which is known as the wind shear, leads to periodic fluctuations in the turbine rotor, which causes fluctuations in the generator output voltage and power. In addition, the turbine torque is affected by other factors such as tower shadow and turbine inertia. The space between the blade and tower, the tower diameter, and the blade diameter are very critical design factors that should be considered to reduce the output power fluctuations of a wind turbine generator. To model realistic characteristics while considering the critical factors of a wind turbine system, a wind turbine model is implemented using a squirrel-cage induction motor. Since the wind speed is the most ...

A multi-body aeroelastic design code based on the implementation of the combined aeroelastic beam element is extended to cover closed loop operation conditions of wind turbines. The equations of a controller for variable generator speed and pitch-controlled operation in high wind speeds are combined with the aeroelastic equations of motion for the complete wind turbine, in order to provide a compound aeroservoelastic system of equations. The control equations comprise linear differential equations for the pitch and generator torque actuators, the control feedback elements (proportional-integral control) and the various filters acting on the feedback signals. In its non-linear form, the dynamic equations are integrated in time to provide the reference state, while upon linearization of the system and transformation in the non-rotating frame, the linear stability equations are derived. Stability results for a multi-MW wind turbine show that the coupling of the controller dynamics with the aeroelastic dynamics of the machine is important and must be taken into account in view of defining the controller parameters.
