Software Project Management: Tools assessment, Comparison and suggestions for future development

2016

Software engineering is concerned with the development and advancement of huge and multiple software intensive systems. It shelters theories, methods and tools for the specification, architecture, design, testing, and maintenance of software systems. Today’s development of software systems are significantly large, complex and critical, that only through the use of automated approaches can such systems be developed and evolve in an economic and timely manner. While using automated software tools which is vital for successful planning and managing of projects. There are many automated software tools which have been developed for different purposes in different situation. The literature on how to select the appropriate software project management tools is fairly narrow. The identification of quality project management software among the existing tools in literature is critical. In this paper we predict which project management tools have a great quality and how this quality can be stan...

Practical Application of Contemporary Project Management Software

Proceedings of the 31st International DAAAM Virtual Symposium ''Intelligent Manufacturing & Automation'', 2020

The realization of modern business, activities and projects poses increasing demands and challenges to project managers. Therefore, modern project management practices are inconceivable without the help of project management software. This paper describes and compares the most commonly used project management software with emphasis on the need for careful selection based on the required software features and other criteria such as software price, necessary implementation time and education of future users and an example of Microsoft Project application in project planning.

Survey and comparison of the project management softwares used by engineering , procurement and construction companies

2015

This paper presents a survey and comparison of a series of project management softwares used by engineering, procurement and construction companies in order to evaluate the best software tools based on chosen features. The evaluation was carried out through the well known Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. After a brief description of the features required by a project management tool and after a brief description of the software tools in exam, the authors applied the AHP method to the softwares cross-evaluating each of their features. Key-Words: -EPC, Plant Construction .

Project Management Tools and Techniques

Nowadays, companies all over the world are more concerned with realising huge profits from project management. This has prompted me to write about what makes projects successful. Project management is more than just executing project tasks. Therefore, in this essay, I have spent quite a considerable effort discussing about project planning tools and techniques.

Factors influencing the usage and selection of project management software

IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, 2003

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and assess those factors that influence the extent of usage, type of usage (planning only versus planning and control), and selection of project management (PM) software by professionals in the field. Discriminant analysis is used to analyze hypotheses relating to these three issues. The analysis is based on the results of a random survey of members of the Project Management Institute. This research was guided by an organizing framework that considers environmental factors (demographics and work environment characteristics), intermediate factors (PM software usage category and historical use patterns), and outcomes (level of software package selected). The analysis reveals strong differences in extent of usage, type of usage, and software selection based on individually significant environmental and intermediate factors. It also provides strong support for the hypotheses relating to extent of software use and level of software package used, while providing qualified support for the hypothesis relating to software use for planning only versus planning and control. These results together validate the organizing framework. Adopters of PM software are advised to consider the findings concerning industry practice as well as their specific needs when selecting and deciding how to use PM software packages.

Comparison of Educational Project Management Tools

2015

Project management tools are mandatory to properly manage software projects. The teaching of the usage of these tools is carried out in higher education computer courses and, usually generic tools are adopted, such as MS-Project. However, their lack of educational features has motivated the development of several educational project management tools. This study aims at the analysis of such existing tools, carrying out a systematic comparison. Therefore, we selected the most relevant educational project management tools based on the results of a Systematic Literature Review. These results were updated, including newly available tools and excluding proprietary and no longer available ones. The selected tools are presented, highlighting their educational features, supported functionalities and content coverage considering the whole project management process. A systematic comparison is conducted, discussing each evaluation criteria, resulting in a guideline for choosing the proper educ...

Project Management Software-An Overview

Project management software is a term covering vast types of software, including estimation and planning, scheduling, cost control and budget management, resource allocation, collaboration software, communication, quality management and documentation or administration systems, which are used to deal with the complexity and different aspects of large projects. Since the project management is one of the core functions of a business organization, the project management function should be supported by software. Before software was born, project management was fully done through papers. This eventually produced a lot of paper documents and searching through them for information which was not a pleasant experience. Once software came available for an affordable cost for the business organizations, software development companies started developing project management software. This became quite popular among all the industries and these software were quickly adopted by the project management community.

A software for project management process

2009

Research Project Management Process, implies the allocation of important human and financial resources to guarantee fulfilling of the goal by respecting the pre-defined schedule, under the conditions of expected quality. Considering that, informatics is looking for solutions to support the teams to develop complex projects. In this paper we propose a new software for project management, along with a new approach but at the same time complying to the requests formulated by the TenStep methodology. This application software, manages schedule, changes, quality control, risk and budget for the projects. Research Project Management -RPM software is our proposal for a complete integration of all project management processes in a unique application that offers procedures to coordinate people and activities in a project. It will help during the phase of design and supervise of a project, as well as changing the initial configuration when the project doesn't develop as planned.

Software Tools for Project Management – Focus on Collaborative Management

Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing, 2014

Today, projects involve members from different geographical areas more than any other time in history. Thus, adequate Collaborative Project Management Software (CollabPMS) solutions are needed to enable individuals and organizations to manage, communicate and work together across time and space barriers. This article describes a set of managerial and collaborative functionalities that a CollabPMS should provide to support the complexities of a distributed project effectively. Out of hundreds software packages available in the market, four were selected, ProjectLibre, Redmine, Microsoft Project 2013 and Clarizen, to assess if they have the described functionalities. Clarizen can be considered the best software for managing distributed projects, because it provides, by default, all the managerial functions and the collaborative features that support the coordinated collaboration level. ProjectLibre was the software that less stood out in this evaluation, although it provides the majority of the outlined managerial functionalities it doesn't support any level of collaboration.
