A Correlation Between Students' English Proficiency and Their Computer Programming Mastery
The English language teaching should meet the learners' needs in terms of their purpose in learning a language. For the students of Informatics Engineering, English is considered important to be mastered not only to comprehend the theory of Informatics Engineering but also to help them in creating a computer program using specific computer programming language. Based on the observation, the Informatics Engineering students find difficulties in handling or solving problems during the process of creating computer program because they do not have good English competence especially in reading skill. This research is conducted to find out whether the learners' English proficiency correlates or affects the learners' ability or mastery in writing a computer program. It is expected that the learner who has a high level of English proficiency will be successful in creating computer program. This study uses two instruments: the learners' TOEFL score to measure their English pr...
In order to find the relationship between students' English ability and the students' programming comprehension, we conducted a survey. The survey explores if students' weakness in the English language affects the ability of the students to understand the programming with respect to the following factors: Computer Lab, lecturer, mathematics, and logical thinking. This paper analyzed the results of two surveys conducted in two Libyan universities. Results of the surveys showed that 37%, 38%, and 25% of students stated that their programming abilities were negatively affected by English, Computer Lab and Lecturer respectively. While over half of the lecturers mentioned that the students' lack of English was the main reason for their weak performance in understanding programming skills. This study found that the programming ability had a moderate correlation with the Level of English proficiency, r=0.63, for both universities. Based on English, Computer Lab and Lecturer...

Designing English for Specific Purposes Course for Computer Science Students
Journal of Education and Educational Development, 2018
The aim of this study was to design English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course for University students enrolled in the Computer Science Department. For this purpose, academic English language needs of the students were analyzed by using a 5 point Likert scale questionnaire. Additionally, interviews were also conducted with four faculty members of the department and the data were analyzed qualitatively. Thus, mixed methods were used for collection and analyses of data. The results of the analysis of questionnaire and interviews indicate that the four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading and writing are frequently used in students' academic context and among the four, speaking is the most frequently used skill. Students are deficient in writing and speaking skills as compared to listening and reading; therefore, speaking and writing should be given preference while designing the syllabus. Keywords: English for Academic Purpose, English for Specific Purpose, needs analysis, syllabus design

This research was conducted in the second semester of Informatics Eng...
SENSASI, 2018
The goals of this study are to find out what is the good strategy to stimulate the students of computer engineering to study English easily and more active in practicing, besides that the lecturer can be more creative to stimulate and motivate the students' especially the new students' to have good impression of study and learning English in the class. This research was taken from the new students of 2017 in the first semester of STMIK Budi Darma by "Introducing their self from class to class for senior class in English" for English class speaking practice. By this research the writer got 10 (ten) students which have the higher scores from the classroom lecturers which have been attended. The positive effects from this stimulate are the students can be improved their ability to speak English in front of senior classes and lecturers, they can increase their confident to speak English in front of class, and they can be brave to face to another people in English and no more nervous as long as they want to talk to another. The negative effects are they need to increase the grammar of English, and they need to practice their conversation more and more. To solve these problems the lecturer has the strategy by creating the book to study in the class for the computer student of STMIK Budi Darma.
English For Informatics Students: A Needs Analysis
Indonesian Journal of Learning Studies, 2021
This study aims at finding out the Informatics students' needs of English in one of the universities in Palopo. It focuses on investigating which English skills and language elements of English are crucial for the students. Moreover, another question arisen here is what type of syllabus suitable for the students. To answer these issues, a survey research was conducted by using an adopted questionnaire to gather data from 33 Informatics students and 20 Informatics lecturers. The results of this study reveal that listening and reading are the most crucial skills for the students to help them understand learning sources. Furthermore, the topics and the materials discussed in the texts should be related to IT, so the students can be familiar with the terms used in their major. Speaking and writing skills also needed by the students but merely the basic ones because English is not used as the language instruction in their classroom and the students are not required to write their assignments and their final project in English.
PAKISTAN LANGUAGES AND HUMANITIES REVIEW
Use of technology has brought revolution in every sphere of life especially it has provided higher level of facilitation to the students on correct writing in English language. It has not only helped students preserve their written work, it has also facilitated their language related problems also. However, technological use for written work in English language has affected correct language use at a greater extent. The uses of grammar checker, grammarly software and quillbot have made students dependent on technology. The students of Computer Science excessively make the use of technology and spend most of their time on laptops and computers which has badly affected their correct language use. Keeping in view the phenomenon, current study was conducted to investigate the types and level of language errors made by the students at University of Kotli Azad Jammu and Kashmir. In this respect, 20 students of Computer Science were selected randomly to carry out the study. These students were given the topic, 'My Dreams' and they were asked to develop an essay of 200 words. Their writings were collected and their copies were distributed to three different English teachers for identification of mistakes. Finally, most common mistakes were highlighted and categorized. The categorized data was analyzed through simple statistical tool and the researchers found problems such as cohesion, lack of cohesive devices, inappropriate use of subject-verb agreement, spelling errors, prepositional errors, punctuation mistakes and errors in the use of capitalization.

An investigation into the contemporary English language needs of second year students of the Department of Computer Science at the Namibia University of Science and Technology, 2021
The contemporary English language demands for the information and technology (IT) industry are largely motivated by developments in modern digital communication technology. Modern computerised machinery with complex operational and installation manuals require high levels of literacy in all language skills as more and more machines are constantly being developed. It is for this reason that IT students need to be taught field specific English language courses that prepare them to perform well in their academic language related tasks and as future Computer Scientists. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the contemporary English language needs for Computer Science students at NUST. The study determined the extent of the existing language needs and gaps. The material design model (Hutchinson & Waters, 1987) was applied as a framework for this study. The model assumes two aspects, the Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and the Present Situation Analysis (PSA). Target needs refer to what the learners need to do in the target situation for them to be able to learn. The Present Situation Analysis addresses students’ lack in language proficiencies. A mixed methods study design was applied. The quantitative method analysed data using the descriptive statistics method while the qualitative method analysed data through explanatory means. A total study population of 170 (ΣN = 170) was studied. The sample size was (ΣS = 118) derived using the convenience sampling method. The data were collected using three mixed methods research instruments. An essay competency performance evaluation scale and two questionnaires were employed. The study findings revealed that there is a need to develop the essay competency writing skills for IT students. The students lacked the knowledge of technical vocabulary, which ultimately weakened their scientific arguments. They need to be taught field specific language courses as a way to prepare them for their current academic and future occupational language needs. Furthermore, the study revealed that there is a gap between what is currently offered to Computer Science students and the tasks that they are expected to perform in the IT industry. The study recommends the assignment of trained English for Specific Purposes practitioners to teach English for Science and Technology courses. IT students can be taught with examples of texts related to their field of study. Lastly, the study recommends that Computer Science language lecturers should be encouraged to use science related academic language in the classroom.
