The paper discusses plot structure in Brno from the 13th to 15th centuries. The town was founded in the fi rst half of the 13th century, on land which had in part been settled in the 12th century, and the ground plan staked out by 1230 at the latest. Plot size was irregular; a delay is possible in the southern part of the town, which was settled by Slavs. The 13th century was characterised above all by wooden houses with cellars, which were sometimes ancillary buildings in the rear of the plots. The “petrifi cation” process began very early, so that in the 14th century it is possible to speak of a stone town. The fi rst latrines appear shortly after 1200 and were very common in the courtyard areas. They are accompanied almost immediately by stone or timber wells. Other types of pits have also been uncovered – surprisingly storage pits were occasionally used for grain until into the late 14th century. Numerous limekilns from the 13th century are particularly noteworthy among the different ovens discovered. The town’s appearance refl ected its relatively prosperous standing in Moravia at that time.
