Leadership and Teamwork in Nursing

Journal of healthcare communications, 2021

Introduction: Leadership is defined as the influencing process of thought, feelings, attitudes, and behaviors of a small or large, formal, or informal group of people by an individual leader. Purpose: The present review study focuses on the nursing team and its characteristics, on the nursing administration and it analyses the way the leadership influences the nursing team. Methods: The material of the study consisted of articles on the subject found in Greek and international databases such as: Google Scholar, Mednet, Pubmed, Medline and the Association of Greek Academic Libraries (HEAL-Link). The exclusion criterion for the articles was the language, except of Greek and English. Only articles and studies accessible to authors were mostly used. Results: The nursing team at the hospital environment is a classic functional group headed by the head nurse of the department, who is designed by the hospital management. The leadership of nurses is linked to decision-making, creating the appropriate atmosphere, adequate assignments, resolving conflicts, the integrity of actions and the effective development of team members through collaboration, and guidance. A good and successful leader will seek to develop the staff during his leadership. Conclusion: The heads therefore serve as role models for nurses and gain the respect of their staff by setting a good example and clear goals.

Exploring leadership in community nursing teams

Journal of Advanced Nursing, 2011

Aims. This article is a report on a study investigating how leadership is perceived in community nursing teams and how these perceptions are translated into working practices of team leaders. Background. The consensus in community nursing literature is that leadership is important, and especially so in a time of change. However, little empirical evidence exists on how leadership works in practice. Method. The study adopted an exploratory descriptive design, utilising individual semi-structured interviews and focus groups in four case-studies, with a total of 54 participants. Two case-studies focussed on district nursing teams and two involved public health nursing teams, located in two geographical areas. Participants debated their understanding of the concept of leadership, its associated practices and behaviours in teams, if they saw themselves as leaders, and what preparation was required. The study was undertaken in 2009. Framework analysis techniques were employed to analyse the data. Findings. A 'quasi-family' model of leadership emerged, with significant emphasis on the importance of personal relationships and support. Nursing grade had a greater impact on perceptions of leadership than geographical context or professional and clinical focus. Conclusion. No clear fit with any existing theoretical framework was identified. However, nurses in the highest grade banding, in particular, demonstrated practices associated with transformational leadership. Nurses expressed the very clear need to be acknowledged, respected and valued, and that those who provided this support were regarded as good leaders.

Leadership Ideas—A Study with Prospective Nursing Leaders

Open Journal of Nursing, 2015

Introduction: The study is based on P. Kostenbaums theory about leadership as greatness. His theory distinguishes four interdependent leadership "orientations": ethics, vision, courage and reality. People with qualities have developed greatness and wisdom in their mind, as well as competence to act ethically. The leadership research has shaped a leadership figure that can be described as a picture of a hero. Aim: The aim of this paper is to find out the idea of leadership based on earlier research and analyse their relevancy for nursing-management. Method: The study is a qualitative study based on earlier studies with focus on the basic idea of leadership with relevancy for nursing management and leadership. Sex students, from a master degree program in Finland, collected data based on earlier research. Findings and Interpretation: The ideas of leadership consist of three basic ideas: leadership as greatness, leadership as interactions and relations, and leadership based on the idea of shared leadership. Discussion: The prospects for leading others are to master the balance between the degree of freedom and control, to build trust, and to provide directives and control until confidence. To lead without "meeting" makes that the employers never give desired results. The purposes of the ideas of leadership are to create trust, confidence and understanding of where the other person is located. Being seen and being confirmed is fundamental to pace an individual and create opportunities to lead within nursing care.
