A study of the implementation of quality management systems (QMS) within the Kuwaiti manufacturing industry

2015

The intended contribution and unifying purpose of this research was to identify the enablers and barriers affecting the implementation of quality management systems (QMS) within the Kuwaiti industrial context. This was achieved by assessing the current practices adopted by a number of manufacturing firms in Kuwait and then the gaps or areas that need to be filled were measured. QMS is defined as an organisation’s structure, responsibilities, processes, procedures and resources which guide and control an organisation with regard to quality in order to constantly improve the effectiveness and efficiency of its performance. QMS enables businesses to minimise undesired impacts on the processes while maximising the effectiveness and efficiency of those processes that deliver products or services to end-users. This PhD research focuses on identifying the general state of the manufacturing sector within Kuwaiti Small, Medium and Large Enterprises (KSMLEs) and analyses links, enablers and b...

Therefore, to be successful in a competitive business environment, organizations must pay attention to quality. Product quality is the main priority of any production company to achieve maximum customer value. Highquality products have a special advantage in the market, and the market share can be won or lost based on the quality. It is the only factor that ensures the survival and then the growth of an organization. It has become clear that an effective quality management system improves product quality and increases profits. In this paper, a case study is made to see what was carried out by monitoring some production companies that have lately implemented quality management systems. The sources of data collected from the managers were observation, interviews, and electronic documents. We have listed all the benefits and disadvantages observed after interventions of quality management. The data under observation were Key Performance Indicator standards. The design model aims to examine the results of Key Performance Indicators in the production line after the implementation of total quality management. The data for this model are chosen based on the literature review of Total Quality Management, the consultation with the companies' managers, and the client standards. The qualitative Design approach using a case study is the research methodology used to carry out the paper. The main goal of this study is to use a real-world case study to identify and quantify some of the most significant key factors of the Quality Management System, which have generated positive income, and some of the main challenges that these company has faced during implementation. However, because the other companies were just in the first stage of implementation and the managers had not yet measured any results, only one of the companies was chosen for analysis. The findings of this study show both sides, positive and resistance, between quality management dimensions and firm performance in the production companies which operate in developing countries and have decided to go globally. The conclusions have demonstrated the full strength and importance of the Quality management system in the long term.

Assessment of the Extent of Implementation of Quality Management System (QMS) and Cost of Quality (COQ) Concepts – A Case from a Developing Country

The Journal of Engineering Research [TJER], 2017

In developed countries, the application of the quality management system (QMS) is widely proven. However, in developing countries, like Pakistan, industries are not mature enough to understand and implement the system. The aim of this study is to examine the perception of quality, implementation of QMS and cost of quality (COQ) program in value-added garment sector, which is one of the major subsectors of textile industry in Pakistan. The methodology of the study is a questionnaire survey. The findings suggest that the majority of the respondent firms have well implemented quality management (QM) practices. Trend of results also depicts that most of the organizations wish to acquire ISO certification, which shows that the industrial processes are customer-centered thus striving to fulfil customer requirements. It can also be concluded that most of the organizations lack the COQ concept, its understanding and appropriate implementation.
