Reformulating a Comprehensive Relationship between Religion and Science: An Islamic Perspective
Islam & Science, 2003
Formulation of the relationship between Islam and science has been confused because of misuse and misunderstanding of key terms and their precise context. Which Islam? Which science? If we are aiming at a science molded in the crucible of Islam, we need to approach science as a theoretical construct with four components: a body of knowledge, basic premises, methods of study and goals, all of which must be fully informed by the domain of iman and understood at the level of ihsan. This paper establishes a philosophical framework for the harmonious relationship between epistemological dimensions of science and the Islamic worldview as well as between ethical and societal dimensions of science and Shari'ah. Keywords: Islam; science; context; normative teachings; theoretical structure; hierarchy of values; conceptual goals; epistemological; ethical; practical application; holistic; Shari'ah.
The Modern Worldview and Islam's Perspective on Science
GIC Proceeding
This research aims to analyze the Western and Islamic perspectives on science. From a Western perspective, science is often viewed as the outcome of objective scientific methods and empirical research. This approach emphasizes the use of reason and logic in developing knowledge. On the other hand, the Islamic perspective acknowledges the importance of scientific methods in acquiring knowledge but also emphasizes the spiritual and revelatory dimensions in understanding reality. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis of these perspectives, examining the similarities and differences in the conceptions of science from both viewpoints. Literature studies and religious references were utilized to gain a comprehensive understanding of these perspectives. The research reveals that while there are differences between the Western and Islamic views on science, there are also significant points of convergence. The analysis results show that the Western perspective tends to lean towa...
The Challenges of Islamic Philosophy of Science Based On Contemporary Islamic Science Thinkers
International Journal of Academic Research in Business and Social Sciences, 2018
Before the dawn of modern science and technology, there was the knowledge of philosophy pioneered by Muslim scientists such as al-Farabi and Ibn Sina. Even Imam al-Ghazali himself discussed science as a subject of philosophy. However, after the rise of Western civilization, there was a separation of religion in daily lives. This had an effect on many knowledge disciplines including Islamic philosophy of science, which was perceived to have been influenced, by modern scientific philosophy introduced by Western thinkers. Realizing this, Islamic thinkers has put an effort to put religion in back its rightful place. The Islamisation of scientific philosophy has its own challenges. Therefore, several questions arise. What are the challenges and issues present in Islamic philosophy of science? Is there still a widespread influence of modern scientific philosophy in Islamic science philosophy? Based on these questions, this working paper presents three objectives. The first is to identify the definition of Islamic philosophy of science. The second is to identify the criticisms of modern scientific philosophy. The third is to analyse the challenges faced by Islamic philosophy of science based on the thinking of contemporary Muslim science experts. This literary study has found two challenges faced by Islamic philosophy of science. The first challenge is the internal challenge which comes from the knowledge of Islamic science itself and the second challenge is the external challenge which is the influence of modern scientific philosophy upon Islamic philosophy of science. Therefore, there is a need to develop Islamic philosophy of science so that it will centre absolutely on tauhid towards Allah (SWT).
Interconnection of Konwledge Science, Islamic Religion and Philosophy of Science
Khatulistiwa
This paper seeks to highlight the similarities and differences of science, Islam, and the philosophy of science. The discussion of this paper begins with the assignment of definitions of these three topics. The next discussion is the concept of the three such as the three components of science and the four requirements or rules of science; teachings and objectives of Islam; and the two tasks, objects, and benefits of the philosophy of science. The relation between science and philosophy of science is evidenced from the structure of objectivity, the subjectivity of scientists, and the efforts of control or judgment. The relationship between religion and philosophy of science can be seen from the dominance of morality in the ideal imagination as a standard of product, attitude, and activity. Another proof of the relationship between Islam and the philosophy of science is the variant of Islamic epistemology in the form of bayānī, burhānī, and 'irfānī. The relationship between scien...

From the very first revelation, it is clear to us that a focus on mastery of science has been given by Islam through the Glorious Qur’an. Indeed, there are many more verses in the Qur’an that provide scientific encouragement for Muslims to master this branch of knowledge. While the Qur’an does contain many scientific verses in nature, this does not mean that the Qur’an is a book of science. Instead, the Qur’an is a book of signs for those who think and understand. This paper looks at the significance of science and scientific thought in Islam, and the lessons that can be learnt from the Qur’an and the Islamic Civilisation with regards to the development of science and scientific thought. This paper also looks at how the Qur’an provides inspiration to Muslim scientists to further their research in their respective scientific fields.
From Islamicizing the Sciences to Strategizing for Muslims’ Scientific Breakthrough
International Journal of Islamic Thought, 2015
At inception, science and religion were seen as poles apart and so science was vehemently kicked against by religious leaders. Islam later came to bridge the gap between religion and science only to be later hijacked by the Western world and so science was rewritten from a purely materialist point of view; hence, experts in modern science became over-confident and arrogant to have relegated religion to the lowest ebb and looked down upon any knowledge which could not be scientifically proved. However attempts are being made to reconcile religion and science by Muslim reformers. These attempts are not without their shortcomings, hence the need for Islamization of the sciences for them to conform to the Islamic principle of unity of knowledge. However, the present researcher feels that there should be a step forward from the contemporary approaches to Islamicizing the sciences in form of colouring the Western scientific discoveries Islam, to making their own scientific breakthroughs, the type which immortalized Muslim scientists of the Islam's golden ages. Without this, Muslims will continue to be mere consumers of the Western products. The strategy for the Ummah to achieve this is suggested in this paper.
The Concept of Science in Islamic Tradition: Analytical Studies of Syed Naquib Al-Attas on Knowledge
Tasfiyah: Jurnal Pemikiran Islam
Secularism is a thought born of Western perspectives and experiences, which has had a negative impact on contemporary science. The bad impact is based on the conception of secularism itself, in the form of disenchantment of nature, or the emptying of the universe from religious and spiritual values; desacralization of politics or political exclusion from religious and spiritual elements. Also, deconsecration of false or relativizing human values, so that there are no absolutes in a truth. For this reason, Syed Naquib al-Attas sees the need for the Islamization of knowledge to answer the problem of secularism. Through a library research type study with a descriptive-analytical approach, it can be concluded that al-Attas' Islamization of knowledge answers the problem of secularism in science with three things. Therefore, the composition of the concept of Al-Attas science is built on an Islamic worldview, it is hoped that a Muslim will use his Islamic worldview in viewing reality a...
