Virtual Laboratory for Engineering Education: Review of Virtual Laboratory for Students Learning

Engineering Science Letter

E-learning is currently a rapidly growing trend which attempts to provide an infrastructural configuration that integrates and encompass learning content, services and tools as a single solution which can generate and deliver educational contents and training effectively, efficiently and cost-effectively. In advanced technical education, laboratories are essential learning spaces. Providing laboratory facilities at universities with limited funds and technical know-how is difficult due to the high expenses of installation and upkeep. In order to tackle these obstacles, "virtual laboratories" have been established. Through remote access, virtual laboratories make it possible for users to conduct experiments similar to genuine systems. Consequently, resources of laboratories can be shared across a wide community of geographically dispersed customers while restricting operational expenses and initial set-up to one single institution. This article reviews the virtual laborator...

Educational practice in virtual laboratories for engineering studies

2002

In this article new ways to approach the educative process are presented, they are shown from a point of view of the education methodology, as the virtual laboratories. A study of the necessity to incorporate in the education of engineering degrees, virtual laboratories. In addition, the advantages that these laboratories offer are analyzed and the disadvantages that the students have when they use them and other new technologies which are involved in the use of this means of education. The study and analysis that appear here have been made with computer science engineering and technical engineering students. This studies have a technical-scientific character and are intimately linked to the use of new technologies and virtual laboratories.

The use of Virtual Instruments in engineering education

Virtual instruments are used nowadays for measurement and control, but also as educational tools for students, being well accepted and stimulating innovation in the process of exploring the real world. It leads to discover interrelations, the phenomena are easier undersold and theory is better assimilated. The tool can be used in real laboratories as well as in virtual laboratories, constituting a support for self-learning or distance learning. This article presents how virtual instruments can be used in engineering education, with examples from our Vibration Laboratory, together with a qualitative research regarding the perception of students to this issue.

Applications of Virtual Instruments in Electrical Engineering Education

2004

This paper describes the application of virtual instruments implemented using the National Instruments LabVIEW software, with various objectives in Electrical Engineering Education. The front panel as well as the main resources and functions of some instruments (a digital oscilloscope, a function generator, a power supply, a digital and an analog multimeter, an analog ammeter, resistance and capacitance decades) have been reproduced on the computer screen. Therefore, in the context of this work, the virtual instruments (VIs), rather than playing the role of interfacing real modules with the computer, are in fact mimic images of traditional equipment. The front panels with accessories and cables are interconnected in comprehensive virtual workbenches, so that these virtual instruments can be operated by using the computer mouse and keyboard, and the measurement procedures can be simulated as they are performed in a real world laboratory bench. Several routines, associated to Basic El...

Development and evaluation of virtual laboratory for engineering education

2015

Practical component is often considered as one of the most important characteristics of the engineering education. In this context engineering education laboratories play very important role, by helping the students to test theoretically acquired knowledge, enabling them collaborative environment, trial and error learning approach and offline analysis of the experimental results. However, permanent availability of the laboratory and the equipment is one of the main problems in the process of learning. Sometimes, they are even completely missing. The rapid development of information and communication technologies in the last decades has made a huge impact on the education system with a special emphasis on the engineering subjects. The advances of web technologies on the other hand have also significantly improved online and collaborative learning, and students’ learning experience in general. This paper presents a developed virtual online laboratory that aims at helping high school s...

Technology of Virtual Laboratories

Modern higher school requirements specify the necessity of world-wide improvement of teaching forms and methods. With higher institutions being provided with all training aids, a teacher is often not able to give students to the full extent all knowledge the modern society demands for. This problem can be tackled entirely with the help of virtual computer-aided laboratories. Actions being concerned with physical processes and taking place on a computer display introduce quite a new element in conception of physics. Being a source of information a virtual simulator enlarges a lesson so that it contributes to more complete subject perception by a student. Computer imitation dynamics is not only used to display object motion but reveals the mental consistency from ignorance to knowledge. Virtual laboratory is a computer program performing a function of a training simulator and providing a three-dimension model of a unique or typical facility. Combination of extensional object visualization and sound allows to be wrapped up in the virtual world oriented to realistic working conditions and affords an opportunity to participate effectively in a physical experiment. The basic virtual simulator application is performing laboratory work in a variety of engineering disciplines.

Virtual instruments in electrical engineering

… and Computers in …, 2009

Virtual instruments can be used to simulate the action of measurement systems on software generated signals or they can run as computer coupled measuring equipment which can acquire data from the approached process, followed by analysis, interpretation and result display. The main purpose of LabVIEW graphical programming environment is to offer users the possibility to rapidly develop their own virtual instrumentation systems in accordance to their specific needs. By using mostly didactic interactiveparticipating and metacognitive strategies the student is placed in the centre of the instructive-educational process and is stimulated to participate effectively in the development of theoretical and applicative activities revaluating his spirit of initiative independence and creative potential.

Virtual Laboratories in Engineering Education: The Simulation Lab and Remote Lab

Computing and communication technology has had a significant impact on the engineering education system. This technology has improved online and collaborative learning. Besides that, it improves the students learning experiences. One of the distinguishing elements of engineering education is the laboratory requirement. In this paper, we discuss the current trends and key issues in virtual laboratories-simulation environment laboratories and remote laboratories via the Internet. ß

Virtual Instruments - A Chance To Teach Engineering At A Distance

International Conference on Engineering Education ICEE 2001, pp 7D1.24-7D1.26, ISBN 1-588-74-091-9, Oslo, Norway, 6-10 Aug. 2001, 2001

 Most modern mechanical engineering courses follow the life cycle of future product. Product life cycle consists of well-known phases: design, analysis, manufacturing, quality control. Not all of these phases are easy to implement through distance learning courses; expensive laboratory equipment is usually unavailable to distance learning students. Virtual instruments developed with National Instruments' software "LabVIEW" give opportunity to students to have powerfull instrumentation within the software, while measurement is performed in a laboratory. Virtual instruments even enable students to build their own instruments, using software-simulated signals. This paper shows how virtual instruments can be implemented in distance engineering education.
