The Relationship of Information Systems, Supply Chain Management With Organisational Performance

2014

In today's world, Supply Chain Management (SCM) is a key strategic factor for increasing organisational effectiveness and for better realisation of organisational goals such as competitiveness, better customer care and increased profitability (Ganesh Kumar and Nambirajan, 2013). As such, research interest has focused on supply chain practices with SMEs and large organisations in terms of supply chain information systems (SCIS) and organisational performance. Research Approach This study aims at the exploration of the statistical relationship between (SCIS) Effectiveness and Organisational Performance. The findings from a survey involving 168 IT managers show a strong correlation between SCIS and non-financial Organisational Performance across a cohort of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and large organisations. Findings and Originality These findings are further confirmed by a recent publication from Ganesh Kumar and Nambirajan, (2013). This study identified the items used by researchers for the measurement of both constructs. Exploratory Factor Analysis was employed as there was no theoretical basis to specify a priori the number and patterns of common factors (Hurley et al., 1997) especially for the extraction of factors measuring the non-financial performance of a firm. Research Impact The analyses also revealed that companies with a high implementation degree show a better supply chain performance. Furthermore, the results show that this paper contributes to the SCM field by providing scales for financial and non-financial performance constructs, and by exploring how those are improved by the adoption of specific Supply Chain Information Systems. Practical Impact The purpose of this study aims at the exploration of the statistical relationship between Supply Chain Information Systems' (SCIS) Effectiveness and Organisational Performance, when this is measured by financial and non-financial variables and the impacts on SMEs performance.

The study concluded the following results : The sample of textile companies found to be aware of information technology, the sample's companies use information technology, results indicate that the sample supply chain affected by information technology development, there is an impact for the information technology in supply chain performance (firm logistic, vendor relationship management procurement, operation, and customer relationship management), information technology is also used by the sample's companies through doing some improvements to reduce the problems in the supply chain performance. The study recommends that the awareness of information technologies very important for manufactories for the purpose of using it and to gain the advantages of information technologies, the manufactories are also using information technologies for saving labors time utilizing the working hours in a better way to support supply chain performance.

Factors that drive purchasing and supply management's use of information technology

IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, 2002

Purchasing and supply leaders continually search for ways to improve the quality, delivery, and cost of production inputs. Their participation in these proactive supply chain activities can be a significant driver of purchasing and supply management's use of information technology (IT). Using a transaction cost analysis perspective, we surveyed purchasing and supply professionals at the director level or above from the Institute for Supply Management database to determine whether five common purchasing activities increase the need for purchasing professionals to use IT. The purchasing activities studied are 1) supplier alliance; 2) market monitoring; and 3) cost management (including cost analysis, total cost of ownership, and target costing). Of these activities, supplier alliances and cost analysis were found to significantly influence purchasing and supply management use of IT. In addition, industry effects were also discovered, where purchasing professionals in organizations that focus on producing high technology products and services utilize IT to a greater extent than purchasing professionals in traditional manufacturing and service organizations. The findings suggest that while there is evidence of a relationship between purchasing and supply management's participation in proactive activities and actual use of IT, more research is needed to understand how information and technology can better facilitate purchasing and supply management activities.

A REVIEW OF LITERATURE ON IMPACT OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON PERFORMANCE OF SUPPLY CHAINS

In any supply chain the product or the supply moves from supplier to manufacturer to distributers by transporters and then to customers throu gh retailers. Thus Supply Chains are actually networks or the webs. The exponent growth in Information Technology tools have been contributed to the development and expansion of Supply Chain Management all over the world. Thus Information Technology which affects each and every part of the Supply Chain acts as the key driver to provide higher responsiveness while simultaneously improving efficiencies. These tools are used to gather information, analyze the information and to work on it for the better perfor mance of any Supply Chain. But there are several risks associated with the use of Information Technology in the Supply Chain. The larger the change in Information Technology system the greater is the risk of negative impact on operations.

Supply Chain Capabilities and Information Technology Characteristics: Interaction Effects on Firm Performance

Information and communication technology (ICT) has emerged as a significant basis for improving the supply chain. Reports are, however, often conflicting about its effects on firm performance. In order to better assess the contribution of ICT on firm performance from the supply chain management perspective, we propose a research model to investigate the interaction effects of ICT and supply chain capabilities on firm performance. We test the research model with regression analysis on field survey data. The results indicate significant moderating effects of ICT characteristics on the relationship between supply chain capabilities and firms' market performance, but observed are only weak moderating effects on the relationship between supply chain capabilities and firms' financial performance.

The Effect of Supply Chain Integration and It Use on Firm Performance: An Empirical Study on Service Industries

Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research), 2022

Supply chain integration (SCI) has been widely discussed area in supply chain literature. Based on extended resource based view (RBV), and resource orchestration theory (ROT), our study was conducted to analyze the effects of SCI (i.e. information integration, process integration and measurement integration) on firm's performance (i.e. operational, business) in service industries in Pakistan. In addition, we investigate the contingency effect of IT use (i.e. Transaction management, order delivery and customer services, planning & control) on the relationship of integrative Supply chain practices and firm's performance. We follow step wise hierarchical regression approach by pair wise comparison of performance effect of IT use and each dimension of SCI. Survey data were collected from a sample of firms in food, hospitality, fashion, telecom, IT and retail industries in Pakistan. The empirical results indicate that IT use strengthen the effects of SCI on firm's performance by significantly moderating the aforementioned relationship. The results demonstrate best model fitted with pair wise interaction between IT use and SCI mechanisms. The study contributes to supply chain literature by analyzing pivotal role of IT use in integrating various supply chain activities in B2 B and B2 C markets. The research has implications for retail managers, service supply chain planners and distribution companies to use IT in integrating supply chain and materializing performance.
