Academic reading instruction in tertiary English preparatory classes: A qualitative case study of an experienced instructor, 2020

Academic literacy is a crucial means to read, comprehend, and reflect on academic texts. In tertiary English preparatory classes, to lay strong foundations for academic literacy, it is necessary to build a well-structured framework for academic reading instruction. One means of doing this is exploring the pedagogical views and practices of experienced teachers. This qualitative case study focuses on a highly experienced English instructor with established records of success and investigates the participant's views about academic reading instruction, her academic reading instruction practices, and the extent of consistency between her views and practices. The instructor has forty-one years of teaching experience, was given the Excellence in Teaching Award by her institution and is an active digital immigrant with two educational blogs. The research reveals an in-depth analysis of the instructor's multiple subjectivities in academic reading instruction and the details about her investment in learning. The data were collected by semi-structured interviews, teacher's blog posts and journal, and classroom observations and analyzed via thematic analysis. The findings displayed that the instructor believes in the significance of construction and activation of students' background knowledge as well as teacher and student motivation for successful reading. She reported teaching and practicing a number of pre-, while-and post-reading strategies. The reading instruction practices of the instructor displayed full compatibility with her concerning views. The study has significant implications for contexts teaching English for academic purposes (EAP) and concludes that experienced L2 teachers may apply effective teaching practices and serve as examples for their colleagues. ESL students’ perspectives in understanding English reading materials: the insight from a language classroom / Norizul Azida Darus, Norhajawati Abdul Halim and Aini Akmar Mohd Kasim

Universiti Teknologi MARA, Perlis, 2019

Reading is an active language activity which comprises a variety of skills. The reading comprehension lessons are normally used by instructors to help students develop their reading skills. However, in most cases, it was found that reading comprehension lessons have been centered on passages or texts followed by a set of questions. These questions were usually designed to merely test the students' comprehension of the given text and not part of the teaching process. It has been seen and said that students merely scan for information in the text to answer these questions but were unable to relate to it. This could be due to cultural factors including the lack of reading habits among the students but most likely due to the manner reading has been taught. Thus, this study aims to investigate the teaching of English Reading materials and reading comprehension to a group of 15 students undergoing Diploma courses in UiTM Perlis. This is a qualitative study and the data are gathered through classroom observations, students' journals, instructor's diary and interview sessions with the students and instructor to get clearer picture on the problems they face when having to comprehend English materials. The insight generated by the description and analysis of the data collected for this study can be used for a variety of purposes, particularly; to better understand the problems faced by students when having to read in a second language, to help ESL curriculum and instructional practices, and to provide useful insights for educational language policy making.

English language reading habits of the undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya

English Language Reading Habits of the Undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya B.R.D.W.M.T.Kamalawansha and D.G.Amarasingha Abstract The purpose of this interdisciplinary study is to investigate the English language reading habits of undergraduates in the university of Kelaniya. Universities in Sri Lanka today are changing their medium of instruction into the global language in order to cater to the global knowledge economy. As there is a burgeoning demand for graduates who are conversant in English it is essential for them to become confident users of the language. Many co-relational studies have consistently shown that those who read more show more literacy development. The development of reading habits contributes towards knowledge gaining and language acquisition. Many studies have been done on the subject of reading habits and they involve different categories of individuals. But, an adequate number of researches has not been conducted on the tertiary level in Sri Lanka. The objective of this research is to investigate the existing reading habits and the root causes for poor reading habits in the tertiary level students. This is also aimed at identifying problems they encounter and recommend solutions to minimise the problems. The questionnaire survey was carried out with hundred students belonging to two faculties: The Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Sciences. The results revealed that the reading habits of the students are very poor and there is a strong relationship between reading habits and the social status with respect to their families. Among the problems they face when reading, are the lack of proper guidance by the teachers, poor English language reading habits at the primary level, lack of motivation to read English reading material, comparatively higher motivation to refer to media than to read, and lack of attractive reading materials. Key words: reading habits, knowledge economy, tertiary level, undergraduates. References Kaur.S,& Thiyagarajah.R. (2000). The English reading habits of ELLS students in university science Malaysia. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS There are many people that we usually think about when we carry out a research and decide to live in a different city, far from home and distant from our loved ones. While I was away from all the things that I liked, I could always count on several people who helped me to go through all the difficulties of developing mind and spirit in a new place. For all this and for all the situations I had the chance to live with this great opportunity, I would like to thank my aunt, Nilva, for all the support, home and love she gave to me whenever I needed. I would like to thank professor Celia from FURB, who listened to me and stimulated me to never give up. I cannot forget to mention and thank my parents, Udo and Ilse, for understanding my difficulties and my absence, as well as Daniel, my dear boyfriend, who was always by my side, even when we were not near. I would also like to thank CNPQ for financial support and professor Lêda who brought me here and made me a huge part of what I am today.
