EURYDICE : A platform for unified access to documents

Computing Research Repository, 2004

In this paper we present Eurydice, a platform dedicated to provide a unified gateway to documents. Its basic functionalities about collecting documents have been designed based on a long experience about the management of scientific documentation among large and demanding academic communities such as IMAG and INRIA. Besides the basic problem of accessing documents - which was of course the

Development of a model and technology of access to documents in scientific and educational activities

Eastern-European Journal of Enterprise Technologies, 2021

The paper deals with general issues of organizing access to electronic documents in the framework of scientific and educational activities. Large volumes of already existing information, its continuous growth, the heterogeneous nature of storage and distribution, the lack of a unified way of working with it create many difficulties when using it. Awareness of these difficulties, qualitative changes in the field of information technology and telecommunications have led to the need to solve the problem of finding new approaches to the creation of repositories of information resources, their structure, and the development of tools necessary for users. Currently, such approaches are called “digital” or “electronic” libraries. According to the preliminary concept, an intelligent scientific and educational Internet resource will be an information system accessible via the Internet, providing systematization and integration of scientific knowledge, data, and information resources into a si...

Implementation of a repository for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) at the University of Malta Library (UoML) : a case study

2014

Electronic resources have been a key issue for the University of Malta Library (UoML) in the last few years within the context of the library transformation/evolvement into a hybrid one. The Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) project was introduced at the UoML in the year 2007. Initially such theses and dissertations were made available to students on selected workstations at the Melitensia department. With around 3,000 ETDs and an increasing demand for wider accessibility of such intellectual property, the UoML is currently working to implement a repository whereby such theses and dissertations would be available for University of Malta (UoM) registered students via username and password. The purpose of this long essay is to study and present the main issues associated with the implementation of an institutional repository at the UoM, in relation to ETDs. Interviews and studies of four foreign universities were used to gather the findings.

DOL: An Interoperable Document Server

2001

We describe the design and experiences gained with the database-and web-based document server DOL, which we developed at the University of Leipzig (http://dol.uni-leipzig.de). The server provides a central repository for a variety of fulltext documents. In Leipzig, it has been used since 1998 as a university-wide digital library for documents by local authors, in particular Ph.D. theses, master theses, research papers, lecture notes etc., offering a central access point to the university's research results and educational material. Decentralized administration and different workflows are supported to meet organizational and legal requirements of specific document types (e.g., Ph.D. theses). All documents are converted into several formats, and can be downloaded or viewed online in a pagewise fashion. The documents are searchable in a flexible way using fulltext and bibliographic queries. Moreover, a multi-level navigation interface is provided, supporting browsing along several dimensions. DOL is interoperable with global digital libraries such as NCSTRL and can be ported to the needs of different organizations. It is also in use at Stanford University.

Providing Open access for scholarly information

— Digital libraries support the transition of academic institutions towards digital universities, and introducing ETD digital repositories is believed to be a step in this process. This paper describes an ETD Digital Library project at the Libyan Academy of Graduate Studies. The project aims to build digital library for theses and dissertations (ETD). This work is a project for the first institutional ETD digital library in the Libyan country. The researchers developed a system based on Greenstone open source system for building ETD digital library. A metadata for theses and dissertations was developed in this research. The paper addresses issues related to project design, development and user satisfaction. Conclusions highlighted some important lessons learned to date.

The Era of Electronic Documents and the Challenges Facing Their Management

Atlanti, 2015

The rapid evolution of computer science and information technology during the past 30 years has led to a revolution in the way of creating electronic documents and information exchanges. Once monolithic, now document is made dynamic in terms of diversification opportunities of commercial exchanges. The central role played by the documents, for the implementation of business processes across different organizations, already enjoys a growing awareness and recognition larger. Standard ISO 15489, Records Management, puts documents at the heart of business processes and promotes their pursuit of an electronic management system that develops them on these premises. The digitization of documents and their creation since inception in electronic form, facilitates the work of the public regarding research in various fields. Therefore, electronic tools of research are not a goal in itself: they are here to allow and assist the researcher and the applicant to identify more quickly the original ...

Document Management in Context of Collaborative Systems

In this paper we will present the implementation aspects of a document management application, meant to administrate different types of formats. We propose an application which provides full functionality for accessing information, taking into account the security aspects of documents, and quick access to data. The application offers the possibility to track changes, manage data, save information, as well as document management functionalities. Our purpose is to create a suitable, easy-to-use application which, if used, will guarantee efficiency in an organization.
