Critical COMs of success in large-scale construction projects: Evidence from Thailand construction industry (original) (raw)

Critical Success Factors : En Route for Success of Construction Projects

2016

The study of critical success factors is a means of improving effectiveness and efficiency of projects. Critical success factors have been identified in various contexts but there is no general agreement. Most of these studies are too generic and pose a question of applicability on a specific industry such as construction. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify critical success factors through a critical literature review with special attention on project execution stage of construction projects and to identify research gaps to be filled in the future. 40 external factors and 34internal factors were identified. 10 external factors and 19internal factors are repeated in 3 or more papers. More researches are needed on the relationship between critical human resource management factors and project success. Findings are instrumental for industry professionals, academics and policy makers. Further, it will add to the project management body of knowledge.

Critical Success Factors for Different Organizations in Construction Projects

ICSDEC 2012, 2012

Researchers have been compiling lists of key factors the presence or absence of which have determined the success or failure of projects. Early researches of critical success factors were largely theory based; subsequent researches employed the use of statistics and continuously refined methods like neural network and the analytical hierarchy process. Over the passage of time, the focus has narrowed down from broad generalization of 'projects' to 'project classes'.

Critical Success Factors Influencing Performance of Construction Projects

International Journal of Innovative Research in Science, Engineering and Technology, 2015

The study of project success and the critical success factors (CSFs) is considered to be a mean for improving the effectiveness of project. Performance can be assured by identifying and eliminating the factors that cause poor project outcomes. Thus, project managers need better understanding of critical success/failure factors and how to measure them. The purpose of this study is to systematically investigate the causes of project failure and how these can be prevented, managed, or controlled. Constructions projects are frequently influenced by success factors' which can help project parties reach their intended goals with greater efficiency. The aim of this study is to investigate the critical factors leading to construction company success. Many critical success factors such as factors related to project manager's performance, factors related to organization, factors related to project, factors related to external environment became apparent from this study. This study will helpful to identify factors that influence project success.

Analysis of Critical Success Factors for Construction Projects

International Research Journal of Engineering and Technology (IRJET), 2018

Each project is led by tenured construction management professionals with a proven track record of expertise, value, creation, quality construction and customer satisfaction. In every construction projects, the main thing required by any user is quality of work, on time or on schedule deliverables & in budget. But the planned work will different from the actual on site work. So the project team is facing some challenging but unexpected changes. Therefore to study this, the critical success factors can work for this. By this we can atleast organize or will minimize the things happening. This study of critical success factors will improve the effectiveness & efficiency of construction work with the condition of sufficient availability of materials. This study is conducted in order to identify, analyze, & rank the various critical success factors which are directly or indirectly related to the construction projects and which will improve and focus the areas which we want to work. The Relative Importance Index method helps us in analyzing the critical success factors.

A study on project success factors in large construction projects in Vietnam

Engineering, Construction and …, 2004

Large construction projects are inherently complex and dynamic. A comprehensive answer on how to manage such projects successfully is difficult to provide. This paper expounds on the success factors for large construction projects in Vietnam. A survey questionnaire was used to collect data from practitioners. Factor analysis was employed to categorize these success factors perceived by 109 respondents from 42 construction-related organizations. Factor analysis uncovered that these success factors can be grouped under four categories, here titled the four COMs: comfort, competence, commitment and communication.

A Review On Critical Success Factors In Construction Project

Critical Success Factor (CSF) is necessary in construction industry to achieve its goal. Construction industry in India has shown a significant development in recent years and its effect on environment has also increased. Building projects are becoming more difficult and complex nowadays. The project team is facing unprecedented changes. Building maintenance play an important role compared to other factors in building operation. Also, construction research and development process has various factors which affect its success. The earlier approach to success in the construction industry places great emphasis on the ability to plan and implement projects. In the past, companies completing projects in a timely manner within a stipulated budget and meeting optimum quality have been considered successful companies. Minimizing an importance on management practices and organizational stability, companies with successful project completion have been considered as top-performers. In contrast, other industries insist management practices at a corporate level as an essential element of success. However, the future environment of the construction company will be different due to technological and economic advancements. The critical success factors are considered to improve effectiveness and efficiency of the project. The aim of this study is to identify the critical success factor, analyse them and point out which critical factors are important in stages of construction. Some of the factors are identified as crucial to success of the project.

Critical Success Factors for Malaysian Construction Projects: An Investigative Review

International Journal of Built Environment and Sustainability

Construction projects play an important role in the advancement of a nation through infrastructure development that leads to economic growth. They are planned carefully to accomplish certain goals. However, not all the projects achieved the goals as per planned. Many factors contribute to the successes and failures, and it becomes an interesting arena for research. The primary objective of this paper is to outline the development trend of project success measurement globally and locally. The research method employed was to make selected reviews on critical success factors' (CSFs) literature and to compare international standards and progress in incorporating human behavioural aspects of project management to the situation in Malaysia. A somewhat similar pattern can be observed in Malaysia where the studies have departed from the usual criteria of time, cost and quality, to define project success in a more holistic way. However, the domestic industry has failed to respond to the ...

Critical success factors for construction project

Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols, 2016

A construction project failure primarily defined as disappointment in either one or the combination of cost, time, quality, and management. This study is an effort to identify the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) and the relationship between various attributes of a project success. A preliminary comprehensive literature study of previous research works served as the basis of the CSFs, which will be the guide factors to predict the probability of a project success. At the end of the study, the contribution of each critical success factor to the project success will be established.

Factors Affecting the Success of a Construction Project

Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, 2004

Different researchers have tried to determine the factors for a successful project for a long time. Lists of variables have been abounded in the literature, however, no general agreement can be made. The aim of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework on critical success factors ͑CSFs͒. Seven major journals in the construction field are chosen to review the previous works on project success. Five major groups of independent variables, namely project-related factors, project procedures, project management actions, humanrelated factors, and external environment are identified as crucial to project success. Further study on the key performance indicators ͑KPIs͒ is needed to identify the causal relationships between CSFs and KPIs. The causal relationships, once identified, will be a useful piece of information to implement a project successfully.
