GROWING MORE WITH LESS IN THE WESTLANDS WATER DISTRICT IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, CALIFORNIA (original) (raw)
This article looks at the past and current challenges as well as future perspectives of integrated irrigation drainage water management in the Westlands Water District (large irrigation district in the San Joaquin Valley of California). The analysis of the results takes place at district and farm levels to determine whether the agricultural farming strategies are sustainable. Since, the water management system in California is still heading towards sustainability, it can serve as a good example for other countries in the world with arid climate to face and cope with current and future water management issues. Long term experiences with its failures as well as successes in irrigation and drainage water management can draw lessons to other arid areas, for example, Uzbekistan. Although, it should be kept in mind that the policies and strategies cannot be directly applied but rather should be translated taking into account the existing social, technical, and economic aspects of those regions.
