Charles Darwin, Darwinism and Yorkshire, c.1858 - 1909

"This brief paper, a late addition to the conference poapers at the Internation conference on Darwin hosted by the University of Bradford in September 2009, provides an overview of personal links between Darwin and Yorkshire, and outlines the reception of Darwinian evolutionary theory from the 1850s to the early twentieth century, in the county, noting press treatment in Bradford and Leeds newspapers, literary and philosophical societies, mechanics' institutes, and naturalists' organisations. An important location for nonconformists, freethinking autodidacts and radicals of various types, with a flourishing culture of philosophical societies since the 1820s (Darwin was elected an honorary member of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society in 1868), mechanics’ institutes, middle-class field clubs and civic museums; Yorkshire exhibits some of the complex responses to Darwinism discerned at a national level, and identified elsewhere.
