BIM Education, BIM in Practice
Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a transformative approach to designing, constructing and operating the built environment. BIM includes a wide range of concepts, tools and workflows which need to be learned and applied by industry stakeholders. BIM Education represents the process of acquiring the necessary knowledge and the required skills to generate BIM deliverables and satisfy their respective requirements. The documents gathered here stem from the efforts of the BIM Education Working Group (EWG). The EWG started its six month mandate back in December 2011 and included 11 members, equally split between industry (practicing professionals) and academia (university/TAFE lecturers and researchers). BIM in academia: Shifting our attention from product to process

This paper proposes changes in architectural education to respond to BIM technology and the resulting complexity in the design concept. We examine the interoperability issues between design and analysis in professional practice. We present the results of a case study mapping the activities of two interdisciplinary student teams in the early design phases of a BIM-enabled project. Results show the problems associated with building simulation tools, core knowledge lacking in architectural education, and the relationship between information management, team process, and the types of tools used. A flexible curricular structure is proposed in architectural education, expanding our professional roles.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) has rapidly developed in the construction industry recently; it is also considered as one of the core concepts in the Industry 4.0. However, BIM understanding is always seen as a significant problem for BIM implementation. Therefore, this paper aims to provide the insights into BIM awareness of the construction practitioners with the focus on the BIM definition in the New Zealand construction industry where BIM is still in its early stages. 22 interviews were conducted with 26 construction experts holding important positions in their companies and having at least eight years’ experience in the industry. The results indicated that BIM has a variety of meanings to the interviewees.
