The dominant paradigm has a sectorized, production-based and technological approach of agriculture. Since 1990 a radical change of vision, in Europe has differentiated production of private (marketable) goods and public goods, usually neglected by the market. Thus the concept of agricultural multifunctionality (MFA) has evolved, implying a huge step towards sustainability. Its adoption, as a territorial structuring ingredient, with positive impacts on social metabolism, questions the validity of state policies. The objective of this work is to analyze this concept, in terms of its contribution to development and to the demands of global viability.
