Sense of Belonging Mediates the Effect of Interpersonal Relationships on Subjective Well-Being (original) (raw)

Abstract

Previous research has shown that happiness and mental health are associated with the number of relationships a person has, but that the association between these variables is relatively small. Unfortunately, most survey research uses short or even single-item measures to quantify interpersonal relationships. The present study uses a detailed social network measure and also examines the role of sense of belonging as a mediator of the relation between network size and subjective well-being. The results show that the association between number of interpersonal relationships and subjective well-being is stronger than previously estimated and largely mediated by sense of belonging.
