Considerations Regarding the Ergonomics of the Vehicle Interior
Acta Marisiensis, 2023
The evolution of the vehicle industry, as well as the sudden increase in competition between manufacturing companies, dictates the increase in the obligations of manufacturers to meet the increasingly complex requirements of users, in terms of ergonomics, comfort, safety, as well as environmental protection. Researchers have investigated the factors influencing the ergonomics of the vehicle interior which is very practical to improve safety and driving performance in addition, it can significantly reduce the development costs and the development cycle of new vehicle concepts, but the concept of ergonomics was not clearly articulated from a human perspective. This study aims to interpret the definition of ergonomics in the context of the interior of the vehicles and also in the study the influencing factors of the ergonomics of the index layer of the human-machine interaction interface, in the central console of the vehicle, are identified. The influencing factors are analyzed by creating and visualizing bibliometric networks in VOSViewer.
Overlapping ergonomic evaluation in the automotive design process
2002
Ergonomic evaluation typically comes late in the automotive design process, often not performed until physical mock-ups are produced. This may lead to expensive and cumbersome iterations, or to reductions of the final product quality due to low priority of meeting set ergonomic requirements. Computer aided design (CAD) is intensively used for design in the automotive industry. Performance and usability of computers and software are improving at a rapid pace, which enables CAD to be employed even more intensively. This encourages a digital design process where expensive, inflexible and time consuming physical mock-ups are only built at the end of the design process. This incorporates the risk that ergonomic evaluation will be put back even further. A way to address this problem is to enable ergonomics to be evaluated in the digital design process -in a virtual product. However, in many cases, evaluation made in a physical prototype is unbeatable in establishing ergonomic conditions. ...
Determination of Ergonomics for Formula Student Vehicle
International Journal of Engineering Research and, 2017
An ergonomic setup was introduced for the Formula Student vehicle design. The concept was the installation of ergonomics jigs for greater feedback in the least possible budget. The idea was to finalize the entire ergonomics (human factors) data; which processes to be more effective in chassis design. The ultimate goal was to design a chassis which is optimized in terms of size in such a way that it does not effect the drivers comfort.
Framework to Analyse Automotive Interiors with a Focus on Ergonomics
The small car market in India is increasing by leaps and bounds. The market for small cars now occupies a substantial share of around 70% of the annual car production in India of about one million. The main players in the car market like Tata Motors, Maruti Udyog and Hyundai etc. are fiercely competitive and are trying to outdo each other in terms of design and technology. However, ultimately the focus of a manufacturer is providing customer satisfaction which is driven by comfort and ease of use. Automotive ergonomics is the study of how automotive can be designed better for human use. The human factor aspect of designing automobiles is first considered at the Vehicle Packaging stage. The term Vehicle Packaging comes to use whenever a new model is in the early stage of study. It is a method to safeguard and protect space for the human user and necessary components that make up the vehicle being designed. The improvement in the vehicle ergonomics requires a basic understanding of the problems that arise due to the conventional automotive interior design.
Ergonomics and workplace design: application of Ergo-UAS System in Fiat Group Automobiles
Work (Reading, Mass.), 2012
Since 2008 Fiat Group Automobiles has introduced Ergo-UAS system for the balancing of production lines and to detect ergonomic issues. Ergo-UAS system integrates 2 specific methods: MTM-UAS for time measurement and EAWS as ergonomic method to evaluate biomechanical effort for each workstation. Fiat is using a software system to manage time evaluation and ergo characterization of production cycle (UAS) to perform line balancing and obtain allowance factor in all Italian car manufacturing plant. For new car models, starting from New Panda, FGA is applying Ergo-UAS for workplace design since the earliest phase of product development. This means that workplace design is based on information about new product, new layout, new work organization and is performed by a multidisciplinary team (Work Place Integration Team), focusing on several aspects of product and process: safety, quality and productivity. This allows to find and solve ergonomic threats before the start of production, by mea...
A Variety of computer subsystems have been proposed as efficient tools for drivers nowadays. For example, electronics map, communication and multimedia systems have become standard equipments in the car. Through the use of these advanced technologies, drivers can enjoy high-quality life such as receiving real-time information, driving with amusements, quick to reach the destination, etc. However, driving is a mental-driven and highly information-processing task which requires more cognitive ability and less physical skill. It is necessary to estimate human mental workload and physical limit during driving. The objective of this study is to develop a safe and useful control panel which can offer drivers appropriate and useful information during driving. The results of questionnaire study were the priority of E-Car functions in three specific situations. The results can be used to consider E-Car necessary functions in the subsequent experiment. The results of virtual reality experiment revealed that with fewer numbers of buttons on the control panel, drivers feel more comfortable, effective, convenient and safe during driving and manipulating E-Car system at the same time. The result also showed that to converse nine subsystems with 3 buttons substantially better than with five or nine buttons. It can be considered on E-Car control panel design in the future.
Automotive Technology and Human Factors Research: Past, Present, and Future
International Journal of Vehicular Technology, 2013
This paper reviews the history of automotive technology development and human factors research, largely by decade, since the inception of the automobile. The human factors aspects were classified into primary driving task aspects (controls, displays, and visibility), driver workspace (seating and packaging, vibration, comfort, and climate), driver's condition (fatigue and impairment), crash injury, advanced driver-assistance systems, external communication access, and driving behavior. For each era, the paper describes the SAE and ISO standards developed, the major organizations and conferences established, the major news stories affecting vehicle safety, and the general social context. The paper ends with a discussion of what can be learned from this historical review and the major issues to be addressed. A major contribution of this paper is more than 180 references that represent the foundation of automotive human factors, which should be considered core knowledge and should be familiar to those in the profession.
Ergonomics study on an assembly line used in the automotive industry
MATEC Web of Conferences, 2019
Today, for the enterprises, the competition is more and more intense and more competitor try to satisfy their customers. In the field of automotive industry, the demands for the product increase and the company need to satisfy the demand. As the demands increases, the company should produce more product than usual. In the same time the comfort and health of the workers should be consider. Some factors such as workstation design should take into consideration in order to increase the productivity and at the same time protect workers from accidents and health problem. Therefore, the workstations need to be redesign by applying the ergonomics principles. This paper presents the combined application of Artificial Neural Networks and the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) Analysis in the process of redesign ergonomic workstations. Artificial Neural Networks excel in gathering difficult non-linear relationships between the inputs and outputs of a system. We used, in this work, a feed forw...
Ergonomic modernization in a selected automotive company
The article sets out on presenting the macroergonomic modernization of a manufacturing system employed at an automotive company specializing in repairing and refurbishing Peugeot vehicles. The paper outlines features of auto mechanics' workstations, which constitute the weakest part of the system. Based on observations, interviews with mechanics, the company's performance statistics and the activities carried out before, during and after work, the author identified common hazards encountered during the work process. The identified factors were assessed by risk evaluation methods. These were employed to estimate the probabilities of the occurrence of risk, the durations of risk exposures, as well as the nature and severity of their consequences. Based on the combined risk assessment, the article presents ways to minimize risk and precautionary measures designed to achieve a macroergonomic upgrade of auto mechanics' workstations in technical and organizational terms.
