Abstract
What do we mean by “English” and what do we mean by “norms” of language? This talk addresses these concepts, their (mis)understanding, and their impact on clinical practices. Drawing on data from child language acquisition in Singapore, the talk focuses on: • Singapore Standard English (SSE), Singlish (SCE), and exonormative English • Multilingualism in Singapore • Language situation in Singaporean homes • Language norms in actual use at home and in school
