Review on the dimensions of business-university alliances

Proceedings of the International Conference on Business Excellence, 2017

The present paper is concerned with identifying and synthesizing the directions of development of the partnerships between the academic environment and the business environment found in main research dedicated articles in the last five years in three relevant databases: Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge, Science Direct and PROQUEST Central. The method we employed consists in tertiary data selection, processing and filtering by means of adequate software. The thorough literature review on partnerships between the academic and business environments revealed eight main directions of development: sponsoring activities, collaborative research (research partnerships and research services), curriculum development and delivery, academic entrepreneurship, human resource transfer (mobility of academics, mobility of students), informal interaction, commercialization of property right, and scientific publications. In order to qualify the directions of the partnerships we analysed their definitio...

The new dimensions of university-business partnerships

2019

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The goal of the article is to identify the most significant factors that influence the general trends towards the new dimension of university-business partnerships. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: The authors state that modernization processes are essential for social development based on two paradigms: the new paradigm of development policy and the knowledge-based economy paradigm. Authors based their assumptions on the rational choice theory, as well as network institutionalism. The preliminary results of the research were based on 23 individual in-depth interviews with representatives of research institutions, universities and entrepreneurs’ associations, in four cities in Poland (Cracow, Poznan, Warsaw, Wroclaw). THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: The new goal of development policy is not only the growth of GDP per capita, but also the raise of living standards. Many of the premises are planted in the modern understanding of global economy, based on knowledge-ba...

Towards university-business cooperation: Key drivers, barriers and modes

International Entrepreneurship Review, 2019

The purpose of this paper is to review the international evidence on the possible modes of university-business cooperation (UBC), analyse its main drivers, and identify barriers on the path of turning academia towards practice. Research Design & Methods: This work represents a synthesis of systematic reviews, peer-reviewed reports, individual empirical journal articles, predominantly published in the last ten years. Supplementary, a case study has been applied to present the project dedicated to UBC that has been run at the University of Szczecin. Findings: The literature synthesis has revealed several crucial insights on the factors that facilitate or hinder university-business cooperation. Most of the studies highlight the importance of trustful relationships, that positively impact all cooperation activities. Moreover, all examined projects address the benefits for students and alumni of turning academia into practice. On the other hand, the review identified several barriers on the path of UBC development, focusing on connections, funding, organizational culture and internal characteristics. Contribution & Value Added: The contribution here is opening the mind concerning the possible modes of university-business cooperation, the barriers that need to be overcome and key drivers that stimulate the transfer of knowledge. The presented overview may be useful for improving educational policy, forming a higher education institutions' strategy, and making managerial decisions in HEIs, especially in the emerging markets. Determinants of effective university–business collaboration

Journal of Industry-University Collaboration, 2019

Purpose The attention to the university–business collaboration (UBC) for its role in the knowledge-based economy is growing in many countries. In this context, the purpose of this paper is to conduct two surveys to explore the causes of low collaboration between the private sector and academia in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Design/methodology/approach The first survey covers nearly 50 companies to learn their perspectives. Using the findings of the first survey, a second survey was conducted of university researchers to understand the determinants of private and public funding of research and development projects. The survey provided two types of data, namely, categorical and continuous, which were subjected to reliability and normality tests. A linear regression analysis also was utilized to explore the role of different factors on the funded projects by the two sectors. Findings There is a perception among researchers that the private sector is woefully underestimating research c...

The relationship between universities and business: identification of thematic communities

CEPAL Review

This article analyses the link between universities and business from a neo-Schumpeterian evolutionary theory perspective. It aims to identify the thematic communities present in the literature that deals with the university-business relationship, highlighting the focuses of interest of this literature and currently emerging themes. Social network analysis and text mining tools are used for this purpose. The present contribution differs from other reviews by using large datasets, which made it possible to discern aggregate trends in scientific output. Six thematic communities were detected in the literature: technology parks, entrepreneurial university, triple helix, transfer channels, geographic perspective and open innovation. Once these communities were defined, the characteristics of each one were identified, along with their linkages, differences and limitations, with a view to gaining an understanding of the knowledge transfer processes. 1 A precursor of this article is the work of O. Lerena, M. Minervini and G. Yoguel "Comunidades temáticas en el estudio de la relación universidad-empresa: redes bibliométricas y minería de textos", Working Paper, No. 13, Buenos Aires, Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios en Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (CIECTI).

Factors affecting on collaboration of industry with University

AFRICAN JOURNAL OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT, 2011

It is well acknowledged that innovation has become a strategic source in creating sustainable competitive advantages for firms. Since innovation is increasingly related to a firm's ability to assimilate and exploit external knowledge, firms are facing challenges of accessing knowledge and sources of innovation. One of the sources for accessing external knowledge is the knowledge generated in universities. Therefore, the objective of this article is to review the literature on universityindustry interactions and to identify the characteristics of firm which influence its ability in utilizing scientific knowledge transferred from universities. A number of factors are discussed which may influence the knowledge firms obtain from interactions with university researchers. They include: (1) Size; 2) Absorptive capacity; 3) R&D intensity; 4) Structure; 5) Strategy; 6) Culture; and 7) Trust. It is believed that this framework can provide a useful organizing scheme for understanding the existing literature on academic research, explaining the determinants on obtaining knowledge and guiding future studies on this issue.
