Analyzing the Readability Level of the English Textbooks Used in Jordan

Because of the significance of the textbooks in the teaching and learning processes, it is essential to revise them permanently. This study investigated the readability level of the 12th- grade English textbooks and also examined if the reading texts used in Action Pack 12 were suitable linguistically for the 12th -grade students. This study adopted the qualitative descriptive design by using the Fry Graph to calculate the readability level. The researchers chose randomly 20 texts out of 36 texts as a sample of the study. The results revealed that 80% out of the 20 texts were under the level of the 12th-grade students in Jordan. Also, the results indicated that 15 % of the texts were invalid and only 5% of the texts were within the 12th-grade students’ level. The findings also indicated that Action Pack 12 was suitable linguistically for 12th-grade students. Several recommendations are put forth.

ABSTRACT: Textbooks are essential parts in learning process for students and even teachers. T extbooks are considered to be the basic foundations of courses. Lexical Density and Readability of Secondary Stage English Textbooks in Jordan

This study performed to examine the lexical density and readability in secondary stage English language textbooks in Jordan. To check their readability indices and to assess their lexical density. Data were compiled from selected reading sections in the secondary stage English language textbooks and quantitatively analyzed through two online text analysis software. The results indicated that these selected reading texts were lexically medium in general. As for readability, the selected reading texts were syntactically easy to read. Moreover, the study revealed that secondary stage English language textbook for 12th grade is suitable for 8th and 9th grade while English language textbook for 11th grade is suitable for 7th grade. It is concluded that secondary stage English textbooks do not meet the standard requirements of readability indices as they are easier than the expected indices for the target levels. Therefore, it is worth pointing out that further studies should be carried out to investigate the complexity of language in English language textbooks in Jordan so as to provide EFL teachers an effective method in English teaching.

Reading Passages and Skills in Jordanian High School and University EFL Textbooks: A Comparative Analytical Study

The study aimed to examine the appropriateness of the reading content in Action Pack 11 (AP11) which is taught for grade 11, Action Pack 12 (AP12) that is taught for grade 12 at the schools of The Jordanian Ministry of Education and New Headway Plus Pre-intermediate (NHWP) that is taught for Communication Skills (LC 099) at Yarmouk University. The researcher analyzed the types of reading passages and the reading skills taught by the reading exercises in the three textbooks, The content analysis of the reading passages showed no significant differences between the three textbooks and that three textbooks exposed the students more to the descriptive and expository types of passages than to the narrative passages and that the persuasive passages were almost excluded. Furthermore, the analysis of the reading skills showed that “pre-reading activities, skimming, and activities of locating details” were the dominant reading tasks in the secondary stage textbooks whereas “following-up activities that lead to writing, scanning, locating details, and identifying main ideas” were the dominant reading tasks in the university- level textbook (NHWP). The study recommended that a better communication between universities and schools should be established to bridge the reading gap.

Readability of the Second Grade Arabic Language Books in the United Arab Emirates

Purpose of the study: This study aims to measure the readability of Second Grade Arabic Language books in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Methodology: This paper discusses a quantitative survey conducted, based on previous studies which include Momni and Momni (2011), Nasser and Ibrahimi (2013) and Lami and Zoaeni (2014), to examine readability problems in Arabic language books used in UAE schools. The researchers developed a Cloze Test and performed the test on a randomly selected sample of 387 Second Grade students. Both descriptive and inferential statistics (T-Test, ANOVA) were analysed using SPSS version 22 and to examine the readability of Second Grade Arabic Language books. Textbook has become one of the primary materials in the teaching of Arabic language in Malaysia. Studies among scholars shown that the proficiency of Arabic language among non-native students is still at a low level due to many factors including the ineffectiveness of textbooks’ contents. Evaluation of a reading material takes into consideration of many aspects including the readability level, which is the difficulty level of a reading material. A quality textbook is a reading material that is easy to understand. This study discusses the readability of Arabic texts among the upper primary pupils in Al-Amin Islamic Primary School (SRI), Nilai, Negeri Sembilan. This study of readability has a role for documentation to facilitates the Ministry of Education, teachers, policymakers, textbook writers, and the related people in other fields.

English Textbook’s Readability and Junior Secondary School Students’ Performance in Reading Comprehension

This study investigated the English textbook readability and secondary school students' performance in reading comprehension in Ondo state, Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research. The population consisted of all the public secondary schools in the State. The sample size was 680 JSS 3 students randomly selected from 24 public secondary schools, and Macmillan Brilliant English Student's textbook (Book 3).The Fry Readability Graph was used to determine the readability level of the comprehension passages used while Cloze Tests on 3 reading comprehension passages were used for data collection. The data was collected from the book through the application of the Fry Formula ratings converted into readability/grade level and students' performance in Cloze Tests. A major finding shows that the prescribed English textbook matches the students' level, yet the majority of them read at frustration level. Findings on the rural/urban performance in Cloze Tests show that students in urban schools outperformed their counterparts in the rural areas (urban schools mean value = 1.72 (SD=0.78) while rural schools mean value=1.41(SD=0.60).In other words, school location had significant influence on students' performance in Cloze Tests.Therefore, the study recommended among others, that teachers should be involved in the selection process of book prescription for learners. Also, all educators should make text readability a foremost criterion for book selection. Last but not the least, the Ministry of Education in Ondo State should partner with textbook writers and book publishers and make text readability cardinal point of their partnership.
