The Importance of Other People and the Transmission of Affect in Wordsworth's Lyric Poetry
2015
This essay is about the importance of interaction with, and observation of, other people, in some of Wordsworth’s lyric poetry. It revisits the address to Dorothy in ‘Tintern Abbey’ (1798) as a cornerstone for a discussion of some of the ‘Poems Written During a Tour in Scotland’ which were included in Poems, in Two Volumes (1807). The phrase ‘transmission of affect’ refers to the title of Teresa Brennan’s book about a multi-dimensional and more interactive model of subjectivity. Brennan’s model allows for a reading of Wordsworth’s poetry which does not define self-definition in terms of individual self-containment. Wordsworth’s determination to find a way of expressing the presence of, and importance of, other people in his poetry has perplexed his readers and critics right from the start, a bafflement which continues right to this day. A crucial reason for his readers’ puzzlement is the fact that these poems do not conform readily to easily recognizable generic classification. The association of any Romantic poetic genre with the poet’s own self-expression has led to reductive, individual-biased readings of Wordsworth’s lyrics. This essay contributes to an extension of this individual-based understanding towards a more interactive interpretation of Wordsworth’s poetry and poetics. Keywords: Wordsworth; ‘Tintern Abbey’; ‘Stepping Westward’; poetic form; transmission of affect; interactive poetic

Ismail Kadare's The File on H. and the Comedy of Epic
The Modern Language Review, 2016
This article analyzes the relationship between epic, irony and comedy in Ismail Kadare’s 1981 novel Dosja H. (The File on H.), loosely based on the real-life attempts to discover the origins of Homeric epic. Using the theories of Lukács and Bakhtin, the article argues that Kadare’s novel is not merely a droll satire of intrigue and small-town mores in 1930’s Albania, but, far more, an inquiry into the function of literature in the age of philology and a dramatization of the birth of the novel out of the death of the epic and the world to which it belongs.
