Abstract

”The zone of proximal development…..is the distance between the actual developmental level as determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers.” (Vygotsky, 1978. p. 86) This paper discusses some of the characteristics of entrepreneurship education within the framework of culture historical activity theory (Engstrøm, 1987; web 1). First, we analyse the JA-YE Start-up concept in light of the zone of proximal development (ZPD). The Vygotskian concept of ZPD is expanded from the original frames of early childhood learning to learning through entrepreneurship education activities. The asymmetrical relation between the children and the adult (or more capable peers) is developed towards a more symmetrical relation between the teacher and the students in an entrepreneurship setting (Roth & Radford, 2010).
