The History of Tourism: Structures on the Path to Modernity
Various academic disciplines have repeatedly sought to re-evaluate the significance of tourism. Globalised tourism's so-cio-economic place within the framework of the leisure and holidaying opportunities on offer today has attracted particular attention. Such accounts often leave out the fact that this also has a history. The present article aims to overcome this shortcoming: it seeks to present an overview of the important structures, processes, types and trends of tourism against the background of historical developments. It deals with early forms of travel in the classical world and the Middle Ages, as well as the precursors of modern tourism, Bildungsreisen ("educational journeys") and the middle-class culture of travel. It then examines the boom in mass tourism in the 19th century and the unique expansion of tourism in the 1960s characterised by new forms of holidaying and experience shaped by globalisation.

The conventional view of tourism's past is dominated by the history of western cultural experience. Tourism starts with the wealthy, with images of prestigious visits to spas and seaside resorts, Grand Tours and the activities of business entrepreneurs such as Thomas Cook, before it begins to filter down the social ladder. This paper argues that more attention should be paid to tourism's past in non-western societies and cultures and to the more ordinary and routine practices of a wider cross-section of the population. It is too simplistic to portray tourism's evolution as a geographical process of diffusion from one or two core areas and a social process of downward movement from the affluent. Reasons for the prevailing image of tourism's past are suggested and several ideas are proposed for broadening research into its history.
40 Years of Tourism Studies – a Remarkable Story

The formal study of tourism as a distinct subject in the academy is about 40 years old, the same age as Tourism Recreation Research. Over these 40 years it has shown remarkable growth and development and in the process has changed and adapted. This article, drawing inter alia on the author's own 40 years in the tourism academy and on his writings over the period, plots the past, present and future of tourism studies. The article begins with the vocational origins and the rapid changes that brought tourism to a kind of maturity to take its place alongside other social sciences as a subject for research and teaching. It then explores the tensions and challenges that it has faced in more recent years as global competition has forced universities to focus more on their finances and reputations. In this environment, influenced by performance against various metrics, the position of tourism in the academy has been challenging. The article then turns to consider the current problems created by a metrics driven agenda and how there is an opportunity for tourism to meet the needs of a post-industrial world by focusing not on immediate metrics but on the characteristics that tourism offers as a complex area of study.
Understanding a Tourist Destination: A Tourism History Approach

There are highly dynamic and interactive studies on host communities at different tourist destinations. Some studies focus primarily on a particular community as a case to study the implications of tourism development. Many are interested in a more holistic approach, tourist destination development concepts observed in various tourist destinations. However, most of those studies limit their attention only on communities during the period of tourism development. There is a lack of theoretical approaches to guide a researcher to develop an understanding of a tourist destination from an integrated, multiple, different timeframe. To this concern, this paper explores the theoretical foundations of a history by drawing on the aspect of tourism history. The tourism history concept in this paper takes a community in their pre-tourism development into the analysis on the community during its meeting through the tourism processes.
