This study used a randomized complete block design to assess milk nutritional and chemical composition, with each region treated as a block. Ten pedigree dairy goats were identified in each region, where randomization was achieved by collecting milk samples from each farm in triplicates over a period of three months. Dairy goat milk obtained from Mukurweini region had significantly (p<0.05) higher amount of ash (0.96g/100ml), fat (4.01 g/100ml) and protein (4.58 g/100ml) as compared to the other two regions of Kieni East and Kieni West. The mineral composition differed clearly among the three regions with Mukurweini giving significant(p<0.05) high amounts of calcium 152.61 mg/100ml, magnesium 19.90 mg/100ml, iron 0.84 mg/100ml, zinc 0.57 mg/100ml, sodium 51.04 mg/100ml and potassium 196.65 mg/100ml. Dairy goat milk from Mukurweini region also had significant (p<0.05) high levels of methionine 2.84 g/100g protein, phenylalanine 5.56 g/100g protein, threonine 4.79 g/100g protein, histidine3.61 g/100g protein and leucine10.73 g/100g protein. The study established that the Kenya alpine dairy goat milk quality is affected by the geographical location of the dairy goat rearing.
Production Potential, Nutritive Value and Nutraceutical Effects of Goat Milk

Goat is the choice of a poor farmer because they can easily adaptable, least cost in farming and low agricul- ture land. There are more than 500 different goat breeds in the world. Among these many are popular for their milk production potential and known as dairy goats. The most famous dairy goat breeds of Pakistan are Kamori, Beetal and Pateri. Kamori is considered as the cow of the poor farmer as it is good in milk production. The goat milk is well known for its unique characteristics to include an alternative for cow milk allergen people, easily digestible for infant, buffer capacity and higher content of mineral zinc, iron and magnesium. Caprine milk shows the therapeutic effects of various conditions such as anaemia, asthma, stomach ulcer, constipation, insomnia and neurotic indigestion. Novel an- giotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory proteins released by gastric pepsin of goat milk caseins and whey proteins have been proved as a potent candidate against hypertension and associated diseases. Goat milk also utilized for preparing value-added milk products to include cheese, butter, paneer, ghee and ice cream. This review was designed to focus on the goat population, milk yield, milk products, nutraceutical effects and characteristics of goat milk.

This study was conducted to evaluate the yield and quality parameters of milk from 60 indigenous South African goats of different genotypes namely Nguni, Boer and Non- descript reared under a free ranging system. Milk yield and quality parameters (milk fat, protein, lactose, solid non-fat and minerals) from Nguni (10), Boer (10) and Non-descript (10) goats was measured and analysed per week at each stage of lactation. Result showed that, Nguni goats produced (1.2±0.09, 1.3±0.11 and 1.2±0.07 litres per day) more milk (P ˂ 0.05) at early, mid and late stages of lactation than Boer (0.6±0.10, 1.0±0.17 and 0.6±0.09 litres per day) and Non-descript (0.3±0.10, 0.3±0.12 and 0.3±0.09 litres per day) goats, respectively. The mean value of milk fat, protein and lactose content from Nguni goat was (3.98, 3.54 and 5.31); Boer goat (2.9, 3.59 and 5.04) and Non-descript goat (4.05, 3.39 and 5.02), respectively.
