This paper presents an on-going progress of a study on landscape elements in the context of culture. The study has sought to discover people’s perception, experience and responses towards their surroundings based on elements that relate to their culture and norms. Eventually, new developments do not seem to recognize and respect the importance of cultural aspects resulting disoriented buildings. An extensive reviewed of the literature was conducted to rediscover the fundamental notions of place, perception and experience. Experiencing a landscape can be a vivid and visceral experience. For artists in particular, landscapes can be a source of inspiration for works, as well as providing integral frameworks in the process. Arguably, the experience between the walker and the landscape is a multi-layered form of communicative expression, where the walker engages in introspective reflection in addition to engaging with the surrounding landscape. This paper will discuss how psycho-geography and sonification methods are used to inform the author's practice in creating audiovisual works, through examining the creative process of one of her works. 1 Introduction Interpretations of the landscape cannot be separated from the observer; our personal experiences filter and colour our observations. Detailing the experience of being immersed in a landscape is a two-part process-firstly, the body processes the landscape through the senses (for most of us, this largely involves sight and sound), then secondly , the mind interprets these sensations through the prisms of memories in order to attach personal meaning to current experiences. Exploring the visceral relationship between observer and the landscape and the expression of personal narratives formed during my time in a place to an audience underpins my practice, which combines field footage, field recordings and performance as a way of creating audiovisual works. Much of the compositional processes behind my practice involve exploring how to incorporate visual and aural elements of the landscape into a vehicle for self-expression and self-reflection. Arguably, the use of landscapes in the creation of artefacts is a form of communicative expression-between the observer and the landscape, and also between the artist and themselves. The act of immersion into a landscape, through being within and forging navigational methods, is a way for the observer to create a dialogue with the land. Through the lenses of this relationship, an observer can then direct their focus onto themselves and their internal dialogue.
EXPERIENCING LANDSCAPE. A PHENOMENOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
In this paper, I draw on a possible conception of landscape from Merleau-Ponty's philosophy. Starting from an overview of the two main positions regarding landscape within the continental philosophical tradition (Simmel and Ritter), I consider the use of the term 'landscape' in Merleau-Ponty's thought, without wishing to claim that the French philosopher presents a philosophy of landscape within his works. I want to show that important elements for the outline of a phenomenological conception of landscape emerge from Merleau-Ponty's philosophy. According to Simmel, landscape is seen as the product of a spiritual act, and in Ritter's perspective, landscape emerges from a detached contemplation of nature proper to humans in the modern era. Contrasted with these views, a consideration of Merleau-Ponty's original works allows to draw on a conception of landscape in which the experiential and perceptual dimensions are fundamental. This view enables us to consider landscape in its centrality for human experience, and leads to a better understanding of the strong ontological commitment between humans and nature.

An Anthropology of Landscape tells the fascinating story of a heathland landscape in south-west England and the way different individuals and groups engage with it. Based on a long-term anthropological study, the book emphasises four individual themes: embodied identities, the landscape as a sensuous material form that is acted upon and in turn acts on people, the landscape as contested, and its relation to emotion. The landscape is discussed in relation to these themes as both ‘taskscape’ and ‘leisurescape’, and from the perspective of different user groups. First, those who manage the landscape and use it for work: conservationists, environmentalists, archaeologists, the Royal Marines, and quarrying interests. Second, those who use it in their leisure time: cyclists and horse riders, model aircraft flyers, walkers, people who fish there, and artists who are inspired by it. Landscape – The Basic Element of Spatial Culture

The space organizing and rationalizing processes are based on the notion of landscape, which can be generally defined as the totality of the space observed at a certain moment, by a given individual or community. Therefore, the landscape is generated by the observer and, as such, it can be classified as a representation. The existence of the landscape is independent of both its comprehensiveness and its similarity with the physical space. Locationally, the landscape exists independently of its coincidence to the space it represents, as the process of observation creates its own set of references/coordinates. As a function on perception, the landscape can be regarded as a phenomenon and thus non-unique. This multiplicity is the result of both multiple observers and multiple modes of perception. Once observed, the landscape is integrated within the cultural paradigm through rational or irrational mental “operational chains”, becoming thus established through its appropriation by the community and its members. The appropriation process is fundamental to the infinite mental and material iterations of the “first” landscape, resulting in second-order landscapes that are reproduced physically as cultural landscapes or mentally as imaginary ones. It is worth noting that the reproductive process is independent of the means of perception, the result taking always a topographical/geographical form, whether the space is observed through the sensory organs, measured geometrically or perceived irrationally through revelation or during the shamanic trance. After all, the landscape of Paradise includes rivers, even though these are (gustatory) made of milk and honey and it possesses climate, even though its perfection is defined according to a human sensorybound index of thermal comfort.
Cultural landscape as the identity of phenomenon

As a foundation of national identity, a cultural landscape can be perceived sensually or spiritually. Associating a country with art, memory, and identity opens up the possibility of a new perception of a particular place as a cultural landscape. The theoretical and methodological basis of the text encompasses Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Pecníková’s [2020] typology of the country as a cultural landscape presented as 1) a real landscape; 2) a fantastic landscape; 3) an ideal landscape. The aim, therefore, is to test the applicability of Pecníková’s typology to a case country – New Zealand, commonly referred to as a Pacific country.
Landscape as Experience: An Integration of Senses and Soul

The extent to which experiential and spiritual perceptions of the senses - in response to an event or place - can be transformed into visual art as a vehicle of communication, is yet to be understood. This paper, therefore, examines if a cohesive physical representation from a structured, visual art system is capable of developing a Christian experiential visual language that communicates a sensorial and transcendental experience of place; in this case North Queensland. Commentary on the physical representation subsequently tests if a holistic integration of one human’s sensorial response to place and an internal experience of Christian spirituality in that place can be communicated to the viewer through an art exhibition. The analysis found evidence to suggest that a spiritual essence of place - seeing place from inside and out - could be communicated and experienced by viewers of the exhibition.
