EFL Teachers' Knowledge of Teaching English
There are many factors which influence the process of teaching English as a foreign language. One of the most influential in the process of teaching English is teachers' knowledge of teaching English. Knowledge of teaching English plays an important role in teachers' effectiveness and their choice of instructional practices. The total sampling of 133 Indonesian EFL teachers with different years of teaching experiences were participated in this study. After obtaining the raw data, the SPSS software (version 20) was used to analyze the data. The findings showed that the most dominant element of EFL teachers' knowledge of teaching English is teaching skills, and there is a significant influence of EFL teachers' teaching skills to their practices of teaching English. This research also indicated that there are no significant differences among the years of EFL teachers' teaching experiences toward their knowledge of teaching English.
Exploring EFL teachers’ English language proficiency: Lessons from Indonesia
Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics
This paper reports on a study looking at the reading and writing proficiency and vocabulary knowledge of Indonesian EFL teachers, the relationship between proficiency and years of service, and the teachers’ own perceptions of their proficiency in English. Three proficiency tests (Vocabulary Levels Test/VLT, Reading and Writing Tests), questionnaire, and interview were used to collect data. The results point to mixed levels of English language proficiency, negative correlations between years of service and vocabulary, reading and writing test results, and that teachers themselves had difficulties in judging their own English language proficiency. Factors that inhibit the capacity of teachers to focus on their English proficiency are presented. Limitations of the study as well as implications for EFL teachers’ professional development (PD) and future research are also discussed.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers; EFL teaching; EFL curriculum and pedagogy; teaching English to primary children; EFL teaching knowledge; teachers' careers; motivational factors to choose teaching. Indonesia has employed secondary-trained EFL teachers to teach English to children since the EFL program was introduced in primary schools in 1994 (Suyanto, 2004). Many EFL teacher educators in Indonesia have debated the employment of these teachers in primary schools because they were prepared to teach English to secondary school students; it has been assumed that their educational background is not relevant to undertake the teaching task at the primary level. The research investigated motivational factors that have brought secondary-trained EFL teachers in Indonesia to choose the EFL teaching profession and to teach English to children in primary schools, and analysed the EFL teaching knowledge these teachers used to work with children in primary classrooms. The overarching questions of the study are: "What motivational factors have led secondary-trained EFL teachers to teach English in primary classrooms?" and "How do these teachers approach the work of EFL teaching in primary classrooms in Indonesia?" The study used a qualitative research approach underpinned by interpretive phenomenology (Heidegger, 1962; van Manen, 1997) to understand the motivational factors and the EFL teaching knowledge of the participants. Interpretive phenomenology supported the researcher's interest in the experience of secondary-trained EFL teachers working in primary contexts in Indonesia. Thirteen participants from nine primary schools in Jambi City, Indonesia were chosen to participate in the study. The participants were interviewed and their practice was observed. The research findings highlighted the following themes. Themes related to the participants' motivational factors showed participants as entering the teaching profession and teaching English for extrinsic and altruistic rather than intrinsic reasons. However, the study revealed that after entering the EFL teaching profession intrinsic motivational factors were more evident in participants' accounts of their experience. This change was considered in light of the religious beliefs of the participants, the majority of whom were Muslims. vi The analyses of participants' EFL teaching knowledge suggested that the knowledge these teachers used to teach English to children in primary classrooms was relevant to current theories and practices of language teaching proposed by language experts such as McKay (2006), Cameron (2007), Harmer (2010), and Richards (2011). Their practice was influenced by their knowledge of children; knowledge of curriculum goals; and language pedagogical knowledge, which they used to create engaging EFL syllabuses and meaningful EFL learning activities for children to learn English in the classroom setting. The participants divided their practice into three stages: pre-learning, core learning and post-learning as proposed by language teaching experts. Although these participants were trained to teach EFL to secondary school students, whose characteristics are different from those of primary school pupils, the analysis of their experience showed that they were able to use their EFL teaching knowledge to teach the target language to primary school age children appropriately. vii

An exploration of EFL teaching practices in light of teachers’ language proficiency
Elia, 2021
The influence of target language proficiency on language teaching practices is not a new area of research; nevertheless, there is still lack of knowledge since some research results have yield weak and inconclusive findings in different contexts. This research examines the relationship between EFL teachers' language proficiency and their teaching practices. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was followed and two data collection instruments were used: an English proficiency test, to determine the EFL teachers' proficiency level and a class observation scheme, to record instructional practices of seventeen EFL teachers systematically. The percentage of time spent on the different categories of the first part of the scheme and proportions of each category of the second part of the scheme were calculated to perform a Spearman correlation test. After that, a qualitative analysis of the teaching practices was conducted in order to get a deeper understanding of the quan...
EFL Teachers’ beliefs on learning English and their teaching styles
Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences, 2010
When maximizing learning is considered, it is crucially important to consider both the beliefs of language teachers on learning a language and their teaching styles. Therefore, the aim of this study is to find out whether there is a positive correlation between EFL teachers’ beliefs on how their students learn English and how their beliefs affect their teaching styles.
EFL teachers’ perceived language proficiency and teaching effectiveness
Indonesian Journal of Applied Linguistics
The importance of language teachers possessing high level of language proficiency has been extensively studied. On the other hand, studies related to teaching effectiveness (TE) have yet to define the concept of teaching effectiveness, and studies to relate teacher language proficiency (TLP) and TE, especially in Indonesian context are found to be scarce. In addition, the lack of both clear guidelines on how to assess TLP and current and official data of TLP in Indonesia only exacerbate this matter. Thus, the objective of this study was to find the relation between TLP and TE in the context of a language school in Bandung and the perception of its teachers on the role of TLP in the effectiveness of their teaching process. Using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory research design, the result of the data collection was then cross tabulated and analysed using Fisher-Freeman-Halton exact test. It was found that there was a strong positive relation between TLP and the two aspects of T...
Profile: Issues in Teachers’ Professional Development, 2022
This mixed-methods study explores the factors contributing to the language teachers’ effectiveness in the context of English as a foreign language. Through a systematic review of the literature, six main factors were extracted: assessment literacy, content and pedagogical content knowledge, experience, oral proficiency, personality type, and self-efficacy. In the first phase of the study, 13 experts in the field shared their attitudes towards these factors through a semi-structured interview. The data obtained from the interviews was analysed thematically to develop a questionnaire. Ninety-three language teachers participated in a pilot study to validate the newly developed questionnaire. The results were factor analysed. After the required modifications based on the factor analysis were introduced, a questionnaire with 19 items entitled “EFL Language Teachers’ Effectiveness” was developed.
On Iranian EFL Teachers’ Language Learning Strategies, Teaching Strategies, and Qualifications
Journal of English language Studies, 2010
Different factors determine language teachers’ degree of success in their teaching practices. Among these factors, teachers’ own learning experience can play a pivotal role since it affects teachers’ attitudes toward aspects of the knowledge they are to teach. Educators and researchers may have paid less attention to an indispensable component of teachers’ learning experience: learning strategies, which is the focus of this study. This research aimed at finding out whether Iranian EFL teachers use their own learning strategies to teach English. Furthermore, the study investigated whether teachers’ qualifications had any significant effect on the ir use of language learning strategies and teaching strategies. The data was obtained from two questionnaires, the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) and the Strategy Inventory for Language Teaching (SILT). The findings suggested that there was a significant relationship between the teachers’ learning and teaching strategies and...
