Study on biological activity of chitosan after radiation processing (original) (raw)
Nukleonika
In recent years there is a trend in industry to limit the usage of chemical compounds. Natural polymers are new promising materials that possess important properties like biodegrability or lack of toxicity. Radiation processing of natural occurring polymers is an area of current research for development of new applications. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of ionizing radiation modification on bioactivity of a natural polysaccharide. Chitosan with different molecular weights was investigated as a biostimulator – a biologically active substance that stimulates some growth processes in plants. Chitosan in solid state was irradiated with electron beam from an electron beam accelerator Elektronika 10-10 with a dose range from 50 to 300 kGy. The effects of irradiation on the molecular weight of chitosan were investigated by viscosity and GPC measurements. Non-irradiated and irradiated chitosan at concentrations 0.001,0.01, 0.1 and 1 g/dm3 were used for greenhouse tests o...

Impact of UV Irradiation on the Chitosan Bioactivity for Biopesticide Applications
Molecules
Chitosan is known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties that make it a promising candidate for plant protection. However, when sprayed in open fields, the bioactivity of chitosan significantly diminishes, suggesting a possible influence of sunlight on chitosan structure. This study aimed to investigate the effects of UV radiation, by using artificial UV sources simulating sunlight, on the stability of chitosan. A powdered chitosan with a low polymerization degree was selected and analyzed using various physicochemical methods, both before and after irradiation. Some minor differences appeared. UV spectra analysis revealed the disappearance of initially present chromophores and the emergence of a new band around 340 nm, potentially indicating the formation of carbonyl compounds. However, elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF spectra, polymerization degree, and infrared spectra did not exhibit any clear structural modifications of chitosan. Interestingly, irradiated powdered chitosa...
Influence of Uv-Irradiation on Molecular Weight of Chitosan
In the present paper the results regarding the influence of UV-irradiation with 254 nm wavelength on the molecular weight of chitosan are presented. The concentration of chitosan solution was 0.5%(w/w) in 0.1 M acetic acid. The degree of deacetylation, determined by potentiometric titration in an acidic solution by alkaline, was 81%. Viscosity-average molecular weight of chitosan was determined using an Ubbelohde capillary viscometer. Mark–Houwink equation for the calculation of molecular weight was applied. The results showed that the viscosity-average molecular weight of chitosan was decreasing with increasing time of exposure to UV-irradiation. Spectroscopic analysis of UV-Vis and FTIR confirmed the photodegradation processes of chitosan. The increasing absorbance in UV-Vis spectra indicated the formation of new chromophoric groups after UV-irradiation of chitosan. Microscopic studies showed changes on the surface of the irradiated films of chitosan and decrease of the surface ro...
