Parametric Design as a Tool for Performative Architecture

Journal of Al-Azhar University Engineering Sector, 2019

Recently in architecture, the need for rapid automatic exploration of design solutions that respond to complex design requirements through coded systems using computation techniques led to the inception of what is called Parametric Design. It facilities the process of performance based design to integrate performance evaluation of a certain design requirement with optimization techniques to choose near optimum solutions and neglect the bad ones in early design phases affecting form generation. The main objective of this paper is to illustrate parametric design process which consists of four steps connected during conceptual design phase; Parametrization, Generation, Evaluation and Optimization, and enhancing performance in buildings.

Parametric Design Procedures: A New Approach to Generative-Form in the Conceptual Design Phase

American Society of Civil Engineers, 2013

The conceptual design stage often involves a compound set of objectives and constrains such as abstract notions of function and aesthetic, performance, project requirements, site constrains and construction costs. To respond to these complexities, a number of design instances and alternatives need to be developed and assessed against predefined criteria. While this process requires human imagination, computational generative systems are increasingly being used in this stage of the design process. However, some of these approaches have limitations in the ability to make modifications within an interactive environment, requiring a model to be recreated with different attributes and parameters if changing geometry configuration or topology are needed. This research introduces a new approach -Parametric Design Procedures (PDPs) -which combines the techniques of Design Procedures and Parametric Modeling to address the limitations of existing systems. PDPs offer possibilities to explore a particular design instance after a model is constrained through the generation of an infinite number of design instances which can be considered in the evolution of parametric design instances. The rational for, and features of PDPs are described. The viability of this approach is explored through a prototype implementation in Grasshopper. The brief for an architectural design competition is used as the basis for the prototype development. The paper concludes with suggestions for further research and development, for example in the use of other software and other design phases to test the implementation and viability of PDPs.

Parametric design procedure: an approach to 'Generative-form' and exploring the design instances in architecture

In the digital age computer simulation of evolutionary processes has been integrated into architectural design in order to generate, manipulate and visualize non-standard and complex forms. Parametric design has major role in the process of form exploration and generation of design instances within its family via altering values of the parameterized schema. This paper demonstrates an emergent methodology of parametric form generation and form-finding in architectural design which is known as a parametric design procedure. The paper starts with definition of parametric modeling and parametric design methods then analyzing of using a parametric design procedure for generating columns at the church of Sagrada Familia by Gaudi. A geometrical and topological transformation can be done through this approach to overcome the restrictions of parametric modeling, thus an infinite number of unprecedented design instances can be generated.

Strategies for Parametric Design in Architecture

International Journal of Advanced Research in Science, Communication and Technology

A new specialist design role is emerging in the construction industry. The primary task related to this role is focused on the control, development and sharing of geometric information with members of the design team in order to develop a design solution. Individuals engaged in this role can be described as a parametric designers. Parametric design involves the exploration of multiple solutions to architectural design problems using parametric models. In the past these models have been defined by computer programs, now commercially available parametric software provides a simpler means of creating these models. It is anticipated that the emergence of parametric designers will spread and a deeper understanding of the role is required. This thesis is aimed at establishing a detailed understanding of the tasks related to this new specialism and to develop a set of considerations that should be made when undertaking these tasks. The position of the parametric designer in architectural p...

Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAADfutures), 2007

Abstract. Parametric design techniques offer obvious advantages for engineering and manufacturing processes, now architects emerge to apply these methods in their creation of design suggesting solutions at an earlier stage of the process. Through the coupling of architectural design with parametric modelling methods, the paper presents novel techniques that enhance architects’ contribution to building processes based on parametric design creation. This allows a deeper comprehension of the design objectives and aids designers in their decisions to find solutions.

Parametric design strategies for the generation of creative designs

International Journal of Architectural Computing, 2014

As one of the emerging Computer-Aided Design (CAD) technologies for digital design and visualisation in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) domain, parametric design potentially offers an innovative way of generating new design solutions. Despite this potential, design strategies associated with algorithmic scripting are not well understood. This paper provides a comprehensive understanding of individual design strategies supporting creative solutions in parametric design, using the combined application of protocol analysis and Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT).The article examines the generative and evolutionary aspects of parametric design that play an important role in the generation of creative designs. An in-depth analysis conceptualises designers' parametric design strategies into problem-forwarding strategy and solutionreflecting strategy. The solution-reflecting strategy focusing on the solution space of designing has potential to produce creative solutions by parametric design. A more in-depth understanding of parametric design strategies supports its effective adaptation to better serve the needs of digital design and visualisation in the AEC industry.

A Discussion on the implications of Parametric thinking on the design process and the designer

Pushed by practices wanting and needing to produce novelty, computer-aided design systems are increasingly parametric. Such systems give more control and capability to designers, but require much more comprehensive understanding if they are to be used effectively. Mastering these ideas requires skill as designer, mathematician and computer scientist. This paper aims at discussing the implications of parametric thinking on: the designer, the design process and the tools. It also gives a glimpse on new knowledge and skills designers need, to master the parametric and how they can learn and use it. It demonstrates clearly how using patterns to think about and work with parametric modeling helps designers master the new complexity of the design systems.

Parametric-based Approach in Architectural Design Procedures

2023

The growth of computer-aided tools used to illustrate or represent the results of architectural projects has been outstanding during the past several years. The establishment of technologies is meant to help designers produce architectural shapes swiftly and interactively. During the earliest design stages, architects may build highly complicated geometric forms and make numerous creative choices due to recent advances in computer technology for parametric design. New ideas and theories could be needed to investigate architectural parametric design alternatives within the theoretical framework. The relevance of parametric design in space design exploration in contemporary architecture is theoretically covered in this study. The topic will then be strengthened by looking at a structure that incorporates parametric design, namely the Abu Dhabi Louvre Museum in the United Arab Emirates in order to assess the efficiency of parametric modeling and design ideation.

Parametric architectural design using shapes and structures

Journal of graphic engineering and design

This paper explores the creation of architectural structures through parametric design tools. The proposed methodology presents an alternative framework of using digital tools for the product design development from the design thinking point of view. The main core of the suggested design process includes a great number of theoretical issues from design identity, design language and architectural design areas. As a result, designers can develop constructions for public spaces that are based on innovative morphologies by using new digital design techniques such as computational design (Rhino3D and Grasshopper). The development of an architectural structure that aims to bring greenery into the city and increase the rest and action spaces is presented. A valuable aspect of this exploration is in positioning the proposed design framework inside - to aid in the creative process and better leverage downstream outcomes. The final steps of the proposed methodology include the production of t...
