Conceptual modeling research in information systems: What we now know and what we still do not know

Much of conceptual modeling research over recent times has been guided by a seminal research agenda developed by Wand and Weber (2002), which identified twenty-two research opportunities. In this paper, we explore whether existing research has provided sufficient answers to these questions. Our findings from a review of the literature show a dialectic: several of the opportunities noted in 2002 have been addressed substantially while others have been entirely neglected. We also found several path breaking studies that addressed problems not spotted by the initial framework. To stimulate a forward-looking wave of conceptual modeling research, we provide a new framework that draws the attention of conceptual modeling research to the interplay between digital representations and outcomes.

There have been a growing number of publications suggesting that philosophical ontologies will define a rigorous basis for conceptual modelling, particularly for data modelling methods and notations. An examination of an underlying psychological assumption of the conceptual modelling process is used to show that philosophical ontologies are being used as a ‘telescope’ to view the products of yet another ‘telescope’ and this undermines their reliability by being too far removed from the actual modelling process. An ontology of conceptual structure, derived through linguistic analysis provides a psychologically realistic alternative to the philosophical ontologies that is as close to its mental interpretation as possible and is a more promising approach to understanding the modelling process.

The information systems (IS) research process and writing is built on existing knowledge, principles, theories, frameworks, and models. IS researchers continue to build their ideas on an existing framework called the theoretical framework through which a conceptual framework is formulated. Theoretical and conceptual frameworks are the foundation of any research process in IS research and others. Both theoretical and conceptual frameworks are used by scholars in IS discipline when preparing a research work. IS supervisors always urge their students to apply a theoretical and conceptual framework in their study. But the selection and application of the theoretical and conceptual framework in IS discipline and research are still confusing to IS scholars. This paper deployed a literature review process to determine the critical role of theoretical and conceptual frameworks in IS discipline and research in looking at existing literature covering both frameworks in information systems (IS) research. This study found that the application and selecting process of the theoretical and conceptual framework remains confusing and challenging. The study provides a comprehensive structure for choosing and applying the theoretical and conceptual framework in IS research.
Conceptual Model Notions - A Matter of Controversy: Conceptual Modelling and its Lacunas

The conception of a conceptual model is differently defined in Computer Science and Engineeringas well as in other sciences. There is no common notion of this conception yet. The same is valid for the understanding of the notion of model. One notion is: A model is a well-formed, adequate, and dependable instrument thatrepresents origins and functions in some utilisation scenario. The conceptual model of an information system consists of a conceptual schema and of a collection of conceptual views that are associated (in most cases tightly by a mapping facility) to the conceptual schema. In a nutshell, a conceptual model is an enhancement of a model by concepts from a concept(ion) space. The variety of notions for conceptual model is rather broad. We analyse some of the notions, systematise these notions, and discuss essential ingredients of conceptual models. This discussion allows to derive a research program in our area.
2 . A conceptual model of information systems

Nicola Guarino has coined the phrase ontology driven information systems. This phrase appears to offer ontology based help and guidance for information systems development. In this paper we try to understand better whether, why and where ontology affects information systems. We briefly discuss what kind of help we would appreciate and identify domains of knowledge in information systems development that according to our point of view could benefit from such help. We briefly discuss the following five domains: universes of discourse, information systems resources, information space use, customers, and human inference making.
