A piece by Paul Petau, then adviser to the Parliament of Paris and published in 1610 (reprinted in both 1716 and 1757), includes an illustration of a denarius of the emperor Victorinus which has remained unknown to all (modern) reference works. The comparative precision of the drawing now permits a positive identification with a reverse-die known to have also stuck several aurei.

VIRTVS AVG – Un type monétaire nouveau célébrant les victoires « germaniques » de Gallien à Siscia (264 apr. J.-C.), BCEN 59/2, 2022, p. 12-19.

Abstract – An antoninianus bearing on the reverse a pile of arms, a previously unknown type for the reign of Gallienus but known under the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Commodus, between 175/ 76 and 177 CE, is described here for the first time. The style of the coin allows us to assign it to the very earliest phase of coinages of Gallienus from the mint at Siscia, first opened by Gallienus towards the end of 263 CE. The reverse refers to the emperor’s campaigns against the Germans, also attested by certain coins from the mints at Rome and Milan; this type can also be compared with an aureus, likewise unique, in the name of Postumus.
