Outward Signs: The Powerlessness of External Things in Augustine's Thought (original) (raw)

Abstract

Argues that Augustine invented "expressionist semiotics" (where words are outward signs expressing the inner will of the soul) and used it to formulate his doctrine of sacraments as outward signs of grace. But because his Platonism does not allow the external to have power over the inner, he has no place for the medieval notion of sacraments as outward signs that can confer an inner gift of grace upon the soul.
