The Problem of Teaching English for Engineers

This article discusses some of the problems and their solutions encountered when teaching English to engineers. The main purpose of this research is to present the teaching English for engineers with emphasis on the role of the communicative language teaching. In the global context, students of engineering need a specific set of language skills for their success in education and career.
TEACHING ENGLISH FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS A CHALLENGING TASK
This paper " Teaching English for Engineering Students a Challenging Task " , deals with designing, analyzing and executing the syllabus for a professional group of students keeping in view their career. Most of the affiliated colleges need to stick on to the syllabus of their respective Universities. The General English that the students learn at the first year of B.Tech seems to be inadequate in sufficing the needs of the students as employees. Hence many of the non-autonomous Professional colleges opt for the co-curricular activities to improve the skills of the students. The syllabus that is meant for such students should be a comprehensive one focusing on improving their communicative Efficiency by integrating LSRW skills. Apart from this, the major concern is to increase the employability skills of the students. So the verbal ability of the students has to be improved along with their communicative efficiency. Verbal ability coupled with communicative efficiency yields fruitful results. Thus the paper discusses the needs of the targeted students, the syllabus to be taught, and the challenges that are faced in executing it.
Communication refers to the exchange of thoughts and ideas with the intention of conveying information. In the 21 st century, acquiring basic skills in communication has become essential for personal and professional growth and success. Hence, a student of science and technology cannot afford to ignore communication basics. In the globalize context, students of Engineering and Technology need a specific set of language skills for their success both in education and career. Effective communication skills are indispensable to move up on the corporate ladder. Having this in mind, the English language teacher has to play an important role by taking a responsibility to help the students in developing their communication skills. This paper attempts to highlight the vital role of the English language teacher in developing the required communication skills among the students of Engineering and Technology.
Challenges of English Teaching in Engineering Courses

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate English teaching and its impact on students from the engineering faculty in bilingual CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) application. It was conducted in a public Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Kosovo, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Computing in which data were collected from 180 students. There were 56 students involved in the experimental group, whereas the control groups comprised of 68 students following conventional Technical Drawing with Descriptive Geometry class in native /Albanian language, and 56 students followed conventional English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes as the second control group. Two teachers, one in engineering field, and one ESP teacher were involved in this study throughout the semester, i.e. fifteen weeks. The study incorporated parallel teaching, the same content in two different languages in the experimental group: Albanian/native language by the engineering practitioner, and English by the ESP teacher. The results of three test terms for all the three groups were analyzed by applying SPSS statistical package, and revealed that the experimental group achieved higher success in learning. The study concluded that if there is no teacher available to offer CLIL to future engineers, then teaching engineering courses with the engineering practitioner can be conducted in parallel fashion with the ESP teacher, who can contribute to positive effect in terms of certain engineering subcategories and English professional vocabulary. As such, this study may be considered as a potential example in offering new professional engineering courses which include bilingual paired teaching, of English and a professional course.
TEACHING ENGLISH LANGUAGE AT ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY INSTITUTES IN INDIA: PROBLEMS AND REMEDIES

English occupies a place of prestige in our country, even after more than six decades since the British left India. No indigenous language however has come up to replace English, either as a medium of communication or as an official language. With the Independence, in spite of many a movement against the teaching of English in India under the influence of nationalistic feeling and emotional hostility, English began to reassert its position; but, surprisingly, the number of people who can speak and write English, intelligibly and correctly, is very low. The way English is taught in our educational institutes today is to a great extent responsible for this sorry state of affairs. Our technical know-how has been acknowledged by the whole world, but still our young technical graduates stay unemployed even after scoring fairly well in their degrees. The sole reason is their lacking in communication skills which are considered as the ‘survival skills’ or ‘life-skills’ in the competitive scenario of the twenty-first century. Though, the aim of the Engineering English Course offered at various engineering and technology institutes is to enable the students to learn certainmacro- and micro-skills in the English language and use them effectively as studentswhile following other courses and later as engineers/technologists at the work place; yet, most of them who have undergone thecourse are not proficient enough to communicate effectively in the language. This paper is an attempt to trace the problems faced by both the teacher and the student in the English teaching and learning process at the undergraduate level in the engineering and technology institutes. The paper aims at presenting the contemporary situations in India with regard to English and suggesting remedies where these are called for.
ROLE OF ENGLISH-INSTRUCTION BASED COURSES IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION
Nowadays English plays an important role in education and most of the international articles are in English, hence it is tried to focus on English much more than before .Internet is a versatile tool and made the students access updated information, take part in international conferences and even publish their own articles in the high impact factor journals. It will be possible if the students be equipped to both own technical materials in their own field and English as well. This study is carried out in a class in which Turkish is the native language of the students and the purpose of the study is to highlight the importance of English instruction-based courses to engineering students through dividing class in to two groups. Both students of two groups are Turkish but the only difference is that first group is under Persian instruction and the other is under English medium instruction involving English native speaker instructor with English course books .In the second group weekly tutorial group activity is held .Both groups are asked to write articles in English. The result of the study shows that, the performance of second group is remarkable and consequently leads to write an international article in leading journals.

This research paper presents the results obtained after analysing the answers given by a number of 170 engineering students to questions referring to the current role of English, both in engineering education and in engineers’ professional activity, especially when that activity is carried out in multinational companies. In addition, it emphasizes the importance of presenting students, during the early stages of their academic education, with the advantages provided by a good command of the English language. First, because employers in the field of engineering, especially those representing multinational companies (and such multinational companies are present in Oradea) need employees with a good grasp of English. Second, because academic education often involves the use of English for conducting research and/or for presenting the results of research.
English for Engineers: Meeting their needs of the language learning
Abstract: English now-a- days has become the lingua-franca of the world’s communication network. Its importance can be measured from the fact that it is used as a common language across all the fields of science, technology, academics, research, communication etc. Engineering being one of the biggest fields of study now, the working knowledge of English has become a necessity for the engineering graduates. Employers, now-a- days are looking for graduates acquiring effective communication skills and other diverse set of skills to maintain relevance with the global environment .This article focuses on English language needs of learners of engineering and discusses the effectiveness of English language courses offered. Exceptional language skills is considered to be indispensable for an engineer's academic, professional and personal development. Factors such as students' learning attitude and the existing curriculum impede learning language skills, which makes the role of and English teacher more challenging. If students are to effectively enhance their language skills, then the lessons and materials designed need to actively involve them. This paper mentions a pedagogical change in designing lessons and materials with focus on undergraduate engineering students. The suggested activities and tasks designed are ways to help develop the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing skills related to the English language and will prove to be beneficial to students in the ultimately.
Scaffolding the Development of English Language and Communication Skills of Engineering Students

Teaching English in higher institutions is becoming more challenging in this globalised era. With the demand for communication skills in English as one of the important recruitment criteria, future graduates need to be equipped with sufficient English language and communication abilities relevant for their respective fields. This suggests that English language educators need to teach specialised English language such as engineering which may be beyond their expertise. Having trained as English as a second language educators, most of them may have limited knowledge in engineering. This paper is part of a larger research that explores the development of cross-disciplinary curriculum. This study examined the extent to which English language educators addressed the language needs of engineering students academically and professionally. A total of ten language educators from two Malaysian public universities participated in a focus group where they discussed their teaching practices and experiences in teaching engineering students. In addition, six English for Specific Purposes (ESP) practitioners from European universities were also interviewed to obtain information regarding the practices in teaching ESP at their universities. The results show that there is a gap between the development of engineering students' English language abilities in English language classrooms and its maintenance in engineering classrooms in Malaysia. The study highlights the key considerations to develop a framework that scaffolds the development of English language abilities and communication skills among engineering students within engineering education.
