The Early Neolithic in the Iberian Peninsula: regional and transregional components
2008
The site of Portalón at Cueva Mayor, located in the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain), is an important Holocene archaeological site that was excavated in the 70's but from which little has been published. New excavations starting in 2000 have highlighted a deep stratigraphical sequence with human occupations starting in the beginning of the Upper Pleistocene. In this paper, we present for the first time this stratigraphical sequence with a set of radiocarbon datings comprising from 30.000 BP to 2000 BP.
Iron Age Archaeology in the NW Iberian Peninsula
e-Keltoi, Journal of Interdisciplinary Celtic Studies, 6: 1-72. 2004.
The text offers an overview of the archaeological record of the so-called Cultura Castrexa or Hillfort Culture, corresponding to the Iron Age and part of the Indigenous-Roman period in the north-western Iberian Peninsula, traditionally considered a Celtic region. A diachronic scheme is used, showing the main features of settlement patterns and forms, locations, land use, territoriality, and material culture forms and styles for each of the phases into which the period has been traditionally divided. In closing, we offer a brief summary of the more relevant interpretative trends, followed by a brief historical reconstruction of the period based on anthropological concepts such as the Germanic Mode of Production.

This paper is a state-of-art of the Neolithisation process and Early Neolithic in Iberia's inlands, specifically in the mid and upper Ebro Valley and Central Meseta of Spain. Firstly, a historiographical review of the hypothesis and models of the last decades are presented. In this section, the paper shows that the main theoretical concepts and ideas remain similar for a long time ago but they are nuanced by the last data and analysis. Next, these new data and revisions are analysed, in particular the existence of Neolithic settler pioneer communities and " Mesolithic context with Neolithic elements " , the role of colonization phenomena (DNA analysis, leapfrog colonization and landscape occupation), the pottery studies like main interpretative tool and, finally, the variable of rock art. The chronology is reviewed in the last section.
Re-thinking the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the Iberian Peninsula: a view from the West
2001
To discuss the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in Iberia implies, first, the defining of the concepts. By Neolithic, or Neolithisation, we understand a set of tendencies towards an increasing intensification of resources exploitation, demographic growth, complexity of economic relations, social differentiation, technological improvement and the generation of a new ideology. It was not inevitable, however, and the main question is not how it occurred (even if this is a basic assessment), but why it occurred. In this process, one must not avoid the fact that it implied not only economic or demographic growth, but, primarily for the human groups that were involved in it, it meant more work and increasing alienation. Therefore, it was also a political process. And, using Braudel's (1972) notions, if the long-term is measured by the preceding infrastructure variables, the short-term, decisive changes paid tribute to social conflicts, political complexity and individual initiative. The archaeological record does not answer most of these aspects, but they remain essential, nevertheless. In this sense, the "Neolithic" begins in the late "Mesolithic", the transition period. The evidence for this early stage in Iberia includes (see Oosterbeek 1994): ❶ the Muge-Cocina sequence, spanning the 7 th , 6 th and part of the 5 th millennia 2 2. This is the "geometric" Mesolithic tradition. In the top layers of the Cave of La Cocina (Dos Aguas) and the Cabeço da Arruda shell midden (Muge), sherds of pottery relate to an evolved stage of the Neolithic; ❷ the Mallaetes sequence, not represented in Portugal, and dominated by a bladelets industry. Some ABSTRACT-Paper focuses on Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the Iberian Peninsula by critical review of avaliable concepts and models. The obvious diversity of archeological record is taken as a strating point. Transition in this perspective is not seen as uniform and sudden economic or demographic change but as a slow political process, where different regional groups would have been forced to share the innovations while keeping their differences. Archaeological investigations of the agrarian communities of the 6 th-2 nd millennia BC in the Iberian Peninsula have undergone fundamental transformations over the past 25 years. This paper attempts to provide an overview of this research by considering three topics: 1) changes in theory, perspective, and practice, 2) the discovery of new sites or site types, and 3) developments in analytical methodologies and techniques. It concludes with some thoughts about possible future challenges and directions for research.
