This has led to the exponential increase in the number of users of Web which enables them to access from anywhere at any time. Hence, the marketers are using the Web as a medium for advertisement to attract this mass audience. The advertisement posted by the marketer in the Web persuades the customer to find comparative information about companies, products, competitors and prices without leaving their place. Also unlike other media, the Web advertisement has a unique advantage of interaction with consumers and can directly lead them to purchase the product. Consumer attitudes and interactive digital advertising
International Journal of Advertising, 2009
This research examines consumer attitudes towards four sub-types of interactive digital advertising: internet-based e-and email advertising, and mobile-phone-based SMS-and MMS-type advertising. The differences in attitudes among these four sub-types of interactive digital advertising are also compared. Data are collected from three universities in Taiwan. Data analysis extracts three attitudinal forms (common factors) towards interactive digital advertising, namely, 'informative', 'entertaining' and 'irritating'. Consumer attitudinal forms towards e-advertising and MMS-type m-advertising are both similar and positive (i.e. informative and less irritating and entertaining). Their attitudinal forms towards email advertising and SMS-type m-advertising are less positive (more irritating and less informative and entertaining). furthermore, the three attitudinal forms towards the four sub-types of interactive digital advertising are compared. Consumer 'informative' and 'entertaining' attitudinal forms towards e-advertising and MMS-type m-advertising are similar, while their attitudinal forms towards email advertising and SMS-type m-advertising are equal and lower than towards the previous two sub-types of interactive digital advertising. As for the 'irritating' attitudinal form, consumers feel more 'irritated' towards email advertising and SMS-type m-advertising, while their attitudinal forms towards e-advertising and MMS-type m-advertising are equal and less irritated.
A Framework to Evaluate Internet Advertising Effectiveness
To use interactive media effectively, marketers and advertisers need to enhance their understanding how users perceive the Web as a source of information and entertainment. This paper employs the Evaluation Likelihood Model to develop a conceptual framework to measure the effect of Internet advertising on exploratory buying behavior. The model includes antecedents for individual differences such as the need for cognition, sensation seeking, and social character. These variables affect consumers preferred processing strategies (centrally processed information versus peripheral cues) through their motives and skills.
A Review of Online Advertising Effects on the User Experience
This article reviews empirical research conducted in the last decade on the subject of how online display advertising affects the usability and quality of user experience of websites. In particular, from an in-depth analysis of research questions, methods, and findings of the reviewed studies, the following is discussed: (a) which conceptual and theoretical background knowledge, based on psychological explanations of user cognition, affection and behavior, can best support the design and investigation of online advertising, and (b) which specific adverts features and properties are key to understand and favor certain types of effects on users. By capitalizing on this benchmark knowledge on benefits of adverts and their hidden costs, web researchers and practitioners are encouraged to approach online advertising from a deeper and more comprehensive perspective, which is centered on qualities of web interaction that go beyond traditional usability factors. It is speculated that many of the theories and models developed for advertising effectiveness, and variables used to measure it, could and should be applied also when assessing the quality of the user experience when using websites in general, regardless of whether they contain adverts.

Measuring the Effects and Effectiveness of Interactive Advertising
Journal of Interactive Advertising, 2000
Although interactive advertising is not new, its scale, scope and immediacy has increased substantially with the diffusion of new technologies such as the Internet. The growth of interactive advertising highlights the role of the consumer in the determining the effects and effectiveness of advertising, while challenging traditional assumptions about how advertising works. The active role of the consumer in determining the effects of advertising has important implications for how the effects and effectiveness of advertising are measured and how various measures are interpreted. The present paper offers a discussion of these issues and compares and contrasts traditional notions regarding the measurement of advertising effects with notions that recognize the active role of the consumer in interacting with advertising and the advertiser. Implications for future research are discussed.
Web users' perceptions of and attitudes toward online advertising formats
International Journal of Internet Marketing and Advertising, 2008
This study investigated attitudes and the perceptual antecedents of attitudes toward six online advertising formats and tested the ability of perceptions to predict attitude toward the format (A format) and click through behaviour using a national survey of 1,075 adults. The data supported the four hypotheses of the study: web users possess significantly different attitudes across formats; users hold a varied combination of perceptions about each format; the three general perceptions of entertainment, annoyance and information have a significant impact on A format ; and attitude is significantly related to user behaviour toward that format.
