The synthesis and properties of Tulipalin - based hydrogels (original) (raw)

Abstract

Hydrogels are hydrophilic polymers with intrinsic three-dimensional structure extensively studied as biomaterials or in agriculture as superabsorbent materials. We are described the synthesis of novel superabsorbent hydrogels based on biorenewable monomer - Tulipalin A (α-methylene-γ-butyrolactone). Tulipalin was synthesized following a procedure described by Murray. [1] The aim of the present work was to develop a synthetic method in order to synergistically combine the swelling properties of Tulipalin with practical advantages of acrylamide. These hydrogels were prepared by free radical polymerization (Figure 1) of the hydrolyzed Tulipalin (2-hydroxyethylacrylate) and acrylamide using V-50 as a water soluble initiator and BIS (N,N´-methylenebis(acrylamide)) as a crosslinker. The effect of chemical composition (acrylamide : hydrolyzed Tulipaline ratio), the concentration of monomers in water (15, 30 %) and amounts of crosslinker (0.5, 1, 1.5 %) and initiator (0.2, 0.4 %) were inves...
