We compared the photometric and radiometric quantities in the visible, ultraviolet, and infrared spectra of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), incandescent light bulbs and a compact fluorescent lamp used for home illumination. The color-rendering index and efficiency-related quantities were also used as auxiliary tools in this comparison. LEDs have a better performance in all aspects except for the color-rendering index, which is better with an incandescent light bulb. Compact fluorescent lamps presented results that, to our knowledge, do not justify their substitution for the incandescent light bulb. The main contribution of this work is an approach based on fundamental quantities to evaluate LEDs and other light sources. The design of the LEDs lighting in general household illumination was proposed and compared with the fluorescent lighting in this study. Using the LED as a light source would promote energy saving lighting for household illumination purposes. We used the LightTools and DIALux software to design and simulate different standards of illuminance, different correlated color temperatures and different color rendering indices for household environments. The power consumption and efficiency of traditional illuminated light sources and an LED light source with the same standard of illuminance for lighting the household environment were analyzed and compared with each other. Finally, our results show the advantages of using white-light LEDs for lighting and household illumination.

High-Brightness LED Application Theory and Challenges
LEDs are the most efficient way to turn an electric current into illumination. When a current flows through a diode in the forward direction, it consists of surplus electrons moving in one direc¬tion in the lattice and “holes” (voids in the lattice) moving in the other. Occasionally, electrons can recombine with holes. When they do, the process releases energy in the form of photons. This is true of all semiconductor junctions, but LEDs use materials that maximize the effect. The color of the light emitted (corresponding to the ener¬gy of the photon) is determined by the semiconduc¬tor materials that form the diode junction. The latest high-brightness (HB) white LEDs are made possible by semiconductor materials that produce blue or ultraviolet photons. In addition to the diode, an HB package contains “yellow” phos¬phors on the inside of its lens. Some “blue” photons escape, but others excite the phosphors, which then give off “yellow” photons. The result can be tuned in manufacturing to produce “white” light. Lots of engineering relates to controlling the qual¬ity of this light, with several ways to interconnect multiple LEDs to increase and manage light output. The general approach is to drive series strings with a constant current, but there are subtleties to interfac¬ing the drivers with AC supplies and control schemes. Light and lighting represent basic and crucial elements in the life of humankind. The pursuit of new lighting sources has been a trend of our civilization. This pursuit is generally driven by technological advancements, needs, challenges, and, sometimes, by luxury. Now that we are waking up to realize the consequences of abusing our world’s limited resources, the push towards energy conservation has come to be a mandate, not a choice. Therefore, our world’s current challenge is how to balance between the needs of our modern, possibly spoiled, lifestyle and the necessity to ‘go green’. When it comes to lighting, it is quite easy to imagine the impact of globally improving the efficiency of lighting sources by 10%. But what if it could be improved by 1000%? The use of newly enhanced Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) as lighting sources has the potential to achieve these efficiency improvements while maintaining outstanding performance and reliability that supersede many of the currently used sources. Part One of this two part series sheds some light on the basics of LEDs physical structure, colors, efficiency, applications, and drivers.
LEDs as Energy Efficient Light Bulbs: a Bibliographical Survey
International Review on Modelling and Simulations
Lighting accounts for roughly one-fifth of all global electricity consumption, yet the major share of this energy is emitted not as light but as radiated heat from inefficient bulbs. Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) were the initial substitute for incandescent bulbs. But due to certain characteristics of CFLs, light emitting diodes (LEDs) will be used dramatically in the next few years because of its low energy consumption and long life. This paper presents a survey of literature on the light (LEDs) as energy efficient light bulbs due to their high efficiency. The literature shows an increasing interest in this subject for the last decade, where the enhancement of LED lighting systems using various controllers has been widely investigated. Several technical issues related to thermal properties and LED array configurations have been highlighted. Moreover, some of the current challenges in LED bulb technology have been summarized.

The pollution of the environment and demand for energy are more and more serious because of the speedy development in scientific technology. The new scientific technology of economizing energy and environmental protection is everyone's striving goal. Solid-state lighting source, such as white-light LED, is a light source component which accords with this goal. White light can be produced by mixing differently colored light, the most common method is to use red, green and blue (RGB). Hence the method is called multi-colored white LEDs (sometimes referred to as RGB LEDs). This paper uses tri-chromatic white LED of RGB system to produce LED desk lamp. This paper also investigates different kinds RGB LED quantity and arrangement to find the optimal combination of white-light LED. Finally, we do not only use constant-voltage IC circuits to provide the LED brightness consistency and achieve approximate the whitelight consistency, bust also employ the experiments to validate the characteristics of the lamp developed in this paper.
