Assessing bankruptcy risk for Romanian metallurgical companies
Metalurgija, 2014
In this paper it propose to evaluate the bankruptcy risk of the companies which operate within the Romanian metallurgy industry, over the period 2001-2012, highlighting the impact of Ā nancial crisis on this sector. The bankruptcy risk assessing b y Altman M odel gives us a pessimistic view of the Romanian metallur gical industr y. A little mor e optimistic perspective on the risk of bank ruptcy in Romanian metallur gy is pr ovided by the C onan Holder M odel according to which the best two Romanian metallurgical companies traded at BSE (ALR and ART) face a low risk of bankruptcy. According to this model the Ā nancial crisis seems to have aff ected the Ā rst two Romanian metallurgical companies only in 2009, then in the following years the bankruptcy risk degrease, achieving satisfactory levels.
A Statistical Model of Financial Risk Bankruptcy Applied for Romanian Manufacturing Industry
Procedia Economics and Finance, 2012
The risk of bankruptcy was and is the subject of many research studies aiming to identify the time of bankruptcy, competing factors to achieve this state, the main financial criteria which best expresses this orientation, the bankruptcy, etc. Although there are models that have proved their viability over time, we note that the developed models are successfully applied in space and time in which there were created. In this article we tried to develop a statistical model for prediction of bankruptcy risk, available for the companies which operate in the Romanian space. Thus, we applied a multidimensional analysis technique, namely Principal Component Analysis on two groups of companies in the manufacturing sector, during the period 2000-2011, also including the global financial crisis impact. The financial crisis is the main factor that influenced g impact on the company's financial condition. The two groups of companies are selected from among the listed companies, which are operating in the manufacturing area of activity, respectively one group consists in the listed companies and another group consists in firms that will be unlisted in the next years. The statistical model can be successfully used to predict the risk of bankruptcy for companies which activate in manufacturing area of activity in Romania.
Analysing the risk of bankruptcy of firms: survival analysis, competing risks and multistate models
Interest and research activity in credit scoring techniques and their application has increased in the last decade following the implementation of Basel II agreements, concurrently with the severe economic crisis that has affected Europe and the world. Quantitative methods have been applied to risk analysis for over 50 years. Firms or customers are assigned to two different groups, bad or good, on the basis of the probability of failure/success predicted by the model. Methods of survival analysis from the fields of medicine and engineering were subsequently introduced in order to also study the time until the occurrence of the event of interest. After a brief review of quantitative methods applied in credit scoring, this paper focuses on analyzing different causes of failure, applied to a data set on 15184 Small Business Enterprises in Italy from 2008 to 2013. Firstly, competing risk methodology from survival analysis is applied. Secondly, we go on to take into account the occurrence of a second event in addition to the first; transition and survival probabilities are studied applying a multistate model.
Bankruptcy Analysis On Coal Mining Companies
2021
Financial distress is a condition in which the company is in an unhealthy state, but has not yet gone bankrupt. Therefore, it is important for companies to identify financial distress first as material for evaluation and early warning, especially since the world is currently experiencing an economic crisis due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak. This study aims to detect financial distress in coal mining sector companies. using the Altman Z-Score.The population used as research material was the Coal Mining Sector Company for the period 2016 - 2019. The sample technique used in this study was purposive sampling. The research sample was 22 companies in the coal mining sector with a research time of 4 years resulting in 88 samples. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis and logistic regression test using statistical test tools.Based on the testing of 5 (five) hypotheses, it is concluded as follows: Working Capital to Total Asset (WCTA), Retained Earning to Total Asset (RE...
Survival Analysis Employed in Predicting Corporate Failure: A Forecasting Model Proposal
International Business Research, 2014
In face of the current economic and financial environment, predicting corporate bankruptcy is arguably a phenomenon of increasing interest to investors, creditors, borrowing firms, and governments alike. Within the strand of literature focused on bankruptcy forecasting we can find diverse types of research employing a wide variety of techniques, but only a few researchers have used survival analysis for the examination of this issue. We propose a model for the prediction of corporate bankruptcy based on survival analysis, a technique which stands on its own merits. In this research, the hazard rate is the probability of ''bankruptcy'' as of time t, conditional upon having survived until time t. Many hazard models are applied in a context where the running of time naturally affects the hazard rate. The model employed in this paper uses the time of survival or the hazard risk as dependent variable, considering the unsuccessful companies as censured observations.
Business Bankruptcy Prediction Based on Survival Analysis Approach
This study sampled companies listed on Taiwan Stock Exchange that examined financial distress between 2003 and 2009. It uses the survival analysis to find the main indicators which can explain the business bankruptcy in Taiwan. This paper uses the Cox Proportional Hazard Model to assess the usefulness of traditional financial ratios and market variables as predictors of the probability of business failure to a given time. This paper presents empirical results of a study regarding 12 financial ratios as predictors of business failure in Taiwan. It showed that it does not need many ratios to be able to anticipate potential business bankruptcy. The financial distress probability model is constructed using Profitability, Leverage, Efficiency and Valuation ratio variables. In the proposed steps of business failure prediction model, it used detail SAS procedure. The study proves that the accuracies of classification of the mode in overall accuracy of classification are 87.93%.
Mining and Metallurgy Engineering Bor, 2016
There are numerous studies and research work related to the forecasting of financial distress of companies. Developed theoretical and practical models were used for forecasting such problems. Application of specific model is relatively novel analytical approach and represents an indicator which sometimes could have large importance for decision makers. Indicators for production and business aspects are represented by one of the most suitable synthetic parameters-Altman Financial Distress Ratio, which is sum of weighted individual parameters. The aim of this paper is to present a method for forecasting the financial distress, mainly based on financial parameters of a company. Calculation of financial parameters was based on the public annual financial reports of companies included in the example. Authors applied the Altman Z-score model on sample of two mining companies, to establish accuracy of this model and possibility for application on other mining companies.
The Role of Survival Analysis in Financial Distress Prediction
International Research Journal of Finance and Economics, 2008
Accurate business failure prediction models would be extremely valuable to many industry sectors, particularly in financial investment and lending. The potential value of such models has been recently emphasised by the extremely costly failure of high profile businesses in both Australia and overseas, such as HIH (Australia) and Enron (USA). Consequently, there has been a significant increase in interest in business failure prediction from both industry and academia.
A Survival Analysis of Indonesian Distressed Company Using Cox Hazard Model
International Journal of Economics and Management, 2017
The aim of this study is to see if the control of corruption and financial ratios affect the survival likelihood of financially distressed companies. Of the public listed companies noted on the Indonesian Stock Exchange between 2002-2014, sixty one (61) financially distressed companies were identified as samples via the purposive random sampling approach. The result of Cox proportional hazards regressions showed that the control of corruption had a negative impact on the survival likelihood of the distressed companies, which means the better control of corruption will make the company's financial distress decreased. Size also has a negative influence to the financial distress, the higher the size of the company will decrease the company's financial distress. But this study proved that the higher the liquidity of the company, the higher the company's financial distress. This study proves that agency problems exist in such companies and that corruption is an obstacle that impedes the economic growth of such companies.
