This paper examines the geography of innovation in the Sao Paulo micro-regions. Using data on innovation inputs and outputs at the regional level, this paper examines how territorial factors affect innovation in the regions of the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Previous studies show that local innovation is linked to the quantity and quality of innovative inputs, and the main characteristics of regions are configured as regional driving forces of innovation. However, most studies on this subject have focused on developed countries; few studies have examined developing countries. In this way, this paper presents new empirical evidence on the role of territorial factors in fostering innovation in Brazilian regions. The main results show that local R&D expenditures and the local externalities generated by diversified industry and social filters are the main drivers of regional innovation.

This paper seeks to show the development potential of different regions of Sao Paulo State based on an analysis of its science, technology and innovation infrastructure. In the last ten years, public and private investments in S&T&I grew in Brazil. This new institutional climate opened several opportunities for development according to the different patterns of S&T&I territorial distribution, as we show in Sao Paulo. We analyse these differences based on the spatial distributions of the following input/output indicators: higher education institutions, postgraduate students, indexed scientific articles, investment in innovation, patents, incubators and tech parks. The paper suggests that different territorial patterns should be considered in the formulation of public policies for development.
Innovation and Territorial Development: An Analysis of the Region of São José dos Campos - Brazil

This study aimed to identify and analyze the interrelations between companies, research centers, universities, government and other relevant players in the micro region of São José dos Campos, focusing on the creation and diffusion of innovations as a strategy for regional development. To this end, we made an interview with 12 regional players Involved in this process. It is hoped the results expand the knowledge of regional development in technologyoriented areas, as well as the dynamics of territorial development in the micro region studied. It is an academic contribution in developing strategies for expanding competitive regions throughincentives for innovation and technology transfer.

Local production and innovation systems in the state of S��o Paulo, Brazil

This paper applies a specific methodology to locate and geographically delimit local production and innovation systems in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The source of data is RAIS -Relação Anual de Informações Sociais, elaborated by the Brazilian Ministry of Labor. This database provides detailed information on employment and number of plants for four-digit manufacturing industries at micro-region level. Locational Gini coefficients are calculated to determine which manufacturing industries are mostly spatially concentrated in the state. Once these spatially concentrated industries are identified, location quotients at micro-region level are applied to locate and geographically delimit industrial clusters, to determine local production specialization, and to assess to what extent cluster production is vertically integrated. Finally, filter variables are used to select relevant clusters or local production and innovation systems for case studies based on suggested guidelines. The paper emphasizes that case studies are essential for assessing other important cluster characteristics such as horizontal linkages and qualitative information and for designing cluster policies in a case-by-case approach.
Estándares territoriales de innovación: análisis de las regiones de Portugal
Competitiveness among regions and innovation dynamics are intimately related and depend on a solid and effective innovation system. This study aims to measure innovativeness in different Portuguese regions and to evaluate the nature of the innovation process and the relationship between innovativeness and its region of origin. To characterize the territorial innovation processes and to identify innovation patterns by regions, it analyzes their main distinctive factors, based on the Community Innovation Survey results for each region. Thus, it compares the Portuguese regions by verifying the existence of subjacent clusters and fi nding out the characteristics that distinguish the different groups of regions. The results point to the existence of four groups of regions, and the factors identifi ed are related to the innovation process, namely objectives of innovation, sources of innovation, collaborative networks, triple helix performance, and obstacles to innovation.

This paper sought to provide a theoretical motivation for an Expanded Knowledge Production Function (EKPF) that encompasses both path dependence and spatial spillovers. In addition, search for evidence from Brazil using a Dynamic Spatial Panel Data approach. The purpose is to identify the determinants of knowledge production in the country as well as its temporal evolution, using innovation patents as proxy. Regarding its spatial distribution, we identified a North-South disparity for the knowledge production in Brazil, with Southeast and South producing a large part of the country's patents. Based on the EKPF, we confirmed the path dependence and knowledge spillovers importance to explain the Brazilian innovation. A relational approach to the Geography of Innovation: A typology of regions
Institute of Applied Economics (IREA) in Barcelona was founded in 2005, as a research institute in applied economics. Three consolidated research groups make up the institute: AQR, RISK and GiM, and a large number of members are involved in the Institute. IREA focuses on four priority lines of investigation: (i) the quantitative study of regional and urban economic activity and analysis of regional and local economic policies, (ii) study of public economic activity in markets, particularly in the fields of empirical evaluation of privatization, the regulation and competition in the markets of public services using state of industrial economy, (iii) risk analysis in finance and insurance, and (iv) the development of micro and macro econometrics applied for the analysis of economic activity, particularly for quantitative evaluation of public policies.
