The paper deals with materials of the Upper Paleolithic site Mamony II situated at the north-east of Irkutsk near eponymous village. The site was found in 1995 and excavated in 2011–2012. Cultural remains were found in 2 horizons. The lower, 2nd horizon was recorded in solifluctional loess of layer 4 with radiocarbon age dated 40–30 ka BP (second part of MIS 3). Lithic collection consists of 2318 artifacts made of quartzite, chert, effusive rock, quartz and argillite. There were two strategies of primary knapping. The first core reduction was aimed at flake blanks with exploitation of flat unidirectional reduction system, the second – at flake blanks also using radial system. General types of tools are side-scrapers, end-scrapers, pièce écaillée, thorned tools, rare burins, choppers and retouched blades. The upper, 1st horizon of cultural remains was recorded in loess loams of layer 3 with supposed age 21–18 ka BP (first part of MIS 2). Lithic collection consists of 425 artifacts made of the same raw materials that were used in the industry of the 2nd horizon. The sparse collection doesn’t contain any specific features for characterizing of its habitus; rare tools are presented by end-scrapers, burins and retouched flakes and blades. The lithic industry of the 2nd horizon correlates with such nearest synchronous assemblages as Gerasimova 1 (horizon 2), Spartak 1 and Shchapova 1. The unified chronometry, technical-typological characteristics and presence of non-utilitarian ornamented items allow us to single out the local industrial group named after the most informative complex of Mamony group. The lithic collection of the 1st horizon yields little information for correlation. We can notice that materials of the 1st horizon have several synchronous neighbors – Gerasimova 1 (horizon 1), Shchapova 2, New Angara Bridge (horizon 4) but their collection also sparse and can’t be correlated. Perhaps, the future excavations will allow us to better imagine the nature of the material culture of the middle stages of the Upper Paleolithic in the region.

The article presents materials on the geochemical specialization of late Paleozoic-Cenozoic material complexes of the Central part of the Moscow syneclise. The material composition of geological objects and associated mineralization are considered. The change of geochemical specialization from lithophilic type to siderophilic type in time is established. According to geological and geochemical data, ore formations are predicted: gypsum clay-carbonate, brown-coal terrigenous coal-bearing, uranium in coal-bearing deposits, uranium terrigenous variegated, siderite, phosphorite terrigenous. Keywords: type of geochemical specialization, concentrations of impurity elements, ore formations.

New excavations of the upper layers at Mukhkay 1 conducted in 2019 obtained important data for describing specific features of one of the sites in the northeastern Caucasus dating to around one million years ago. The site belongs to the transitional stage from the Oldowan to the Acheulean. The examination of horizontal spatial patterning of lithic finds in layer 7c provides an insight to differentiated structuring elements of the living surface (niveau d’abitation). The latter point to the presence of specialization components in various sections of the site during the period when it was used. On a more general level, the examined materials are a convincing evidence that objects such as base camps are present in the repertoire of sites of the Caucasus at the transitional stage from Oldowan to Early Acheulean.

The paper presents results of experimental and use-wear study of the large stone items series from the layer 2 of the Late Palaeolithic site Cosăuţi (the Republic of Moldova). As a result of the analysis, functionally diverse tools were identified in the collection under study. These data indicate the widespread use for the production of tools of different types of raw materials: antler, bone, hide, ocher, as well as flint and various other types of stone. Of particular interest is the discovery of the lower and upper grinding stones used for crushing, kneading and grinding of plant materials. According to the authors, such findings are undeniable evidence of the practice of gathering, which expands our understanding of the forms of economic activity of the inhabitants of the settlement.

Srostki-I burial mound is one of the large early medieval necropolises located in the south of Western Siberia. Its study was started in 1925 and 1930 by the local historian M.D. Kopytov and archaeologists M.N. Komarova and S.M. Sergeyev, but the works were in many ways incomplete. Meanwhile, the materials of this site, which gave its name to the culture, still remain relevant for its study. The importance of obtaining more complete information on the funeral and memorial complex is accounted for by the continuation of excavations in 2012-2014 and 2016. A total of six burial mounds containing 15 graves were thoroughly studied during this period. New data has been obtained on the design of ditches encircling the barrows, arrangement of the graves in a row, and presence of pillars at their “heads”, funeral feast ceremony held near the graves and burial mounds, accompanying and individual horse burials, and the structure of composite bows. The discovered inventory confirmed the dating of the site the second half of 9th - the first half of 10th century. According to the revealed details of the ritual, the studied barrows fully correspond to funeral canons discovered on the basis of other monuments of Srostinskaya culture.

The paper is dedicated to the initial period of establishment of the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences associated with the activity of the Moscow section of the Russian / State Academy for the History of Material Culture in 1919–1929. The self-organization and consolidation of Moscow archaeologists proceeded in the 1920s with the organizational framework of this section, as well as the Institute of Archaeology and Art Studies of RANION, State Historical Museum and the Institute of Anthropology of Moscow State University. It could not be accomplished in those years. By the end of this decade, the Institute of Archaeology and Art Studies of RANION and Moscow section of the State Academy for the History of Material Culture ceased to operate as organizational and academic structures. For a short time until 1932 the Historical Museum and the Institute of Anthropology remained the main academic units for Moscow archaeologists, until the State Academy for the History of Material Culture made a decision to reestablish the Moscow section. The authors focuse on the organization and development stages of the Moscow section of the Russian / State Academy for the History of Material Culture and its practical activities. The history of the Moscow section is reviewed in the context of interactions with the head institution in Leningrad and against the background of the social and political situation in the country, especially at the turn of the 1930s.

This article features the entirely new results of an interdisciplinary study of 3 categories of grave goods from one of the most outstanding graves of the Early Magyar Bolshe-Tigansky cemetery dating back to the 9th - early 10th century. Glass beads have been investigated with the aid of scanning electron microscopy. It suggests that all of beads, except for one, belong to the Middle Eastern manufacturing tradition. They were manufactured using a complete production cycle workshops (type A). Their chemical composition corresponds to al-Raqqa glass type 4. The only mosaic bead with a checkerboard design is of Scandinavian origin produced in a type B workshop. The chemical composition of the Soda-Plant ash glass, nature of mosaic beads, predominance of the yellow small wound beads over blue ones and small proportion of green small beads indicate that necklace should be dated the second half of the 9th century. Silver articles are represented by belt and headwear fittings (7 items). Their manufacturing techniques have been studied with the aid of optical microscopy, and their quantitative elemental composition was obtained using ED XRF. All the items were made of silver using a wax casting technique or by means of casting in a clay mould with impression of a model or previously cast ornament. Silver of the different purity was diluted using brass, bronze and copper with a high arsenic content. A variety of silver alloys in such a small selection reflects a different origin of the raw metals and indicates that the clothing accessories were produced in various periods by different artisans. Organic materials were identified using optical microscopy (x400), microchemistry, histochemistry and thermal analysis. The different kinds of textiles comprise three types of a silk fabric, silk interlaced cord, remains of wool fabric, thin felt made of downy fibres and a small piece of textile composed of vegetable fibres. Leather articles of various thickness, a fur item and a reliquary box made of wood and leather have also been identified. A large variety of expensive and prestigious fabrics, and the presence of clothing sewn entirely of silk signify the exceptional wealth of the buried girl.
The investigation results of multilayered site of Kaya Arasy in Crimea (in Russian)
During the archaeological research of a multilayer Kaya Arasy site of Crimea, a clear stratigraphical sequence of cultural layers was established, that are corresponding to the diverse archaeological contexts. In addition, the material from the previous excavations by the A.A. Schepinskii and A.A. Formozov was analyzed and combining those two datasets the stratigraphic sequence of the Kaya Arasy site was established. The material of the site is currently stored in the Bakhchisaray Historical and Cultural Reserve; however, it was not organized according to the periods and the stratigraphical units. The research presented in this paper allowed to attribute this abandoned material to the chronological sequence of Kaya Arasy site.
