Digitizing Artists’ Identity and Networks : EpistolART, a new database (original) (raw)
Abstract
By re-editing the Gaye’s Carteggio inedito d’artisti (1839-1840), the EpistolART project aims to create a new online database. This fully searchable database will allow the scientific community to explore transversely ca. 900 letters written by or to Renaissance Artists, particularly in the Italian peninsula. Researchers will have access not only to a set of metadata (names, dates, places…) but also to digitized reproductions of each original letter and to an accurate edition of the original texts. This paper will not only explore the methodological challenges faced by the EpistolART team with the database’s development but also present the various scientific possibilities opened by a such digital collection.
