The Synonymy of the Story and the Message in Abdullah Hussain’s Novel Masuk ke dalam Cahaya
2013
When Abdullah Hussain’s novel Masuk ke dalam Cahaya , which won a consolation prize in an Islamic novel-writing competition in 1983, first met its reading public in the same year, there was no home-grown analytical framework, one dedicated to the Islamic worldview, to evaluate its literary merit and worthiness as an Islamic novel. But now there is the recently and locally-produced Persuratan Baru which, in consonant with Islamic precepts, prioritises true knowledge, and distinguishes between discourse and story, the former to articulate knowledge and the latter to develop and disseminate the knowledge so articulated. It also introduces, in ascending order of literary worthiness, the three categories of persuratan , sastera and picisan with persuratan and picisan occupying the highest and lowest strata respectively. With Persuratan Baru as its critical tool, the article examines the novel’s objective, and the extent to and manner in which the objective realised has been put to the se...
Social Issues in the Novel of Muhammad Abdul Halim Abdullah: A Study
Muhammad Abdul Halim Abdullah was one of the most distinguished Arabic fiction writers in the middle of the twentieth century. After the Second World War he brought vitality in Arabic fiction writing. In his novel writing we can observe many genres: romantic novels, social realistic novels, and historical novel. As far as the social issues are concerned, we can illustrate from his best known novels like „Al-Jannah al-„Adra‟, „Laqita‟ etc. They are basically social realistic fictions where the writer has depicted the true picture of his society and expressed his inner feelings and emotions. In this article, I would like to sketch a conflicting picture between the poor and the rich; and also between the upper class and the lower class where the powerful authorities of the society discriminate the poor class people and the elite classes of people despise the lower class to be part with them.
Naguib Mahfouz's Arabian Nights and Days: The Allegorical Sequel of The Arabian Nights
Abdalhadi Nimer Abdalqader Abu Jweid, 2020
This article examines the influence of The Arabian Nights on Najib Mahfouz's Arabian Nights and Days. The Arabian Nights provides an archetypal narrative structure which Mahfouz utilizes in his Arabian Nights and Days. The purpose of this study scrutinizes the reformulation of four narrative elements pertinent to The Arabian Nights, namely, plot, narrator, characters, and setting. These elements exemplify the allegorical depiction of political corruption in the Egyptian society. The study's narrative scrutiny follows a textual analysis of the cyclical plot as used in The Arabian Nights. The narrator's name and identity is similar to The Arabian Nights' traditional narrator, but he will be studied in the light of modern Egyptian citizenship. A close reading of the characters' dialogic voice will extricate the author's implicit voice in the novel's magical real context. This voice critiques the dominating political corruption transpiring in an allegorical setting which resembles the contemporary Egyptian society. The conceptual framework used in this study draws up Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of dialogic novel; whereby the author expresses his/her monologic, or abstract ideology, through the novel's dialogic voices.

2013
Arabic literature had played an important role in contributing to the spread of Islamic knowledge and culture among the Malay society. Its contribution continues until the development of modern Malay literature. Most literary researchers agree that the novel entitled Faridah Hanom (1926) represents the first Malay novel. Nevertheless, the novel which was written by Syed Sheikh Al-Hadi, a prominent Islamic reformist in the country in the early twentieth century, has long been debated by scholars for its authenticity, whether the novel is originally written by the author, or it is merely a translation of the famous Arabian novel, Zaynab. Thus, it is the purpose of this study to examine the impact of novel Zaynab’s theme in the emergence of Malaysian novel’s theme. Based on the results obtained, it is found that theme of novel Zaynab contributed to the emergence of the theme of novel Faridah Hanom.
