ANALYSIS OF COMPETITIVENESS IN TOURISM SECTORS WITHIN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE: ROMANIA CASE STUDY
“ACTUAL PROBLEMS OF ECONOMICS “, 2013
Tourism is a rapidly emerging sector in the globalized economy. The number of competing tourist destinations is vast and growing. A given region can be regarded as a commercial unit that tries to attract as many customers i.e. a wider part of the tourism demand (national and international) through an effective combination of input resources. Going down the same logical path, a tourist area must be able to effectively manage inputs, while the output, the result, consists of indicators such as arrivals, overnight stays, added value, employment, consumer satisfaction, etc. A territory can thus evaluate its performance by quantifying its tourism efficiency , allowing decision makers to identify and check any malfunction in the aforesaid process for highlighting a set of policies and activities. An efficient performance at regional level can then be determined based on competitiveness in the region. This analysis is centered on the tourism sector of Central and Eastern European region by highlighting the main strenghts and weaknesses of the analyzed tourism competitiveness, and strategic positioning possibilities of the Romanian tourism in the region.
Sustainability
The competitiveness of tourist destinations presents, from the perspective of sustainability, certain benefits in terms of local and regional development: the involvement of local authorities (city, local and county councils, population) in the conservation of tourist resources, the involvement of tourism agencies in the promotion of rural areas, the creation of brands for each tourist destination/region and the protection of cultural-historical heritage from degradation. Competitiveness, as a segment of sustainability, integrated in Romanian local communities, is necessary in order to offer tourists an unmistakable experience of the natural and anthropogenic tourism potential of destinations, to raise the population’s awareness, to preserve traditions, customs and habits and to practice tourism based on sustainability, awareness and without any pollution of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to highlight the image of Romania’s tourism competitiveness, which could s...
Economic Research-Ekonomska Istraživanja, 2014
The purpose of this research is to analyse the competitiveness of southeastern Europe (SEE) countries with the help of The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) and The Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), as well as to explore the correlation and mutual influence of these two indices. The aim is to explore the homogeneity of SEE countries according to tourism competitiveness performance. The research was conducted on the basis of secondary data sources and statistical methods, with emphasis on the cluster analysis. Structurally, the article is composed of the following parts: Analyses of the competitiveness of SEE countries according to GCI and TTCI, exploration of SEE countries homogeneity according to the GCI and the TTCI sub-indices, as well as according to the pillars within the TTCI. The research results indicate that there exists a high correlation between the TTCI and GCI, as well as that SEE countries are not homogenous according to these indices. The research provides the initial framework for benchmarking the tourism performance of different countries, and determination of objectives and strategies for improving tourism competitiveness.
Development of a methodology for assessing the tourism sector competitiveness at the national level
New Trends and Issues Proceedings on Humanities and Social Sciences , 2016
The aim of this study is to develop and adapt the methodology to assess the tourism industry competitiveness at the national level. International tourism as a source of both direct and indirect incomes of the state, encourages the development of different sectors, not specific to the tourism infrastructure, but through the multiplier effect. In this connection it is urgent to develop new methodological approaches to measure and assess the international competitiveness of countries in order to put countries in a better position in the current competition for tourism revenues. The problem of determining the tourist potential of a particular territory with a view to the most efficient use is a difficult research challenge. The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) has been put in the proposed methodology. The sub-indices, components and indicators that form the TTCI index are used as the parameters that characterize national economy. The application of factor analysis to the TTCI dimension components for the competitiveness of the twelve-dimensional space is reduced to two factors: socially-economic and resource-ecological factors. A two-step cluster analysis in the area of these factors allowed to group fifty-five countries selected for analysis in three homogeneous clusters. Countries, formed in clusters, have similarities in competitive advantages, factors and quality indicators of tourist resources and infrastructure. The comparative analysis of these clusters, using TTCI indicators, allows to describe the formation model of competitiveness in the tourism sector and to determine the qualitative position of the country not only among the closest countries in terms of tourism destination development, but also to draw conclusions about the preferred tourist specialization.
Tourism Function as an Element of Regional Competitiveness
Polish Journal of Sport and Tourism
Introduction. Regions can gain a competitive advantage in different ways, among others by making rational use of their resources in creating regional tourism products. Among these resources, what is of major importance, apart from having natural and cultural resources, is the tourist accommodation offered, which not only makes it possible to increase tourist traffic in the region but can also give it a competitive advantage over other regions. The accommodation and the tourist traffic recorded there can serve as indicators of the level of the development of the tourism function of a region and its dynamics. The aim of the current study is to determine, describe, and analyse the nature of the changes in the tourism function of all sixteen provinces in Poland. Material and methods. The study used indices based on the size and type of the accommodation and the volume of tourist traffic. Statistical data for the years 2000-2015 concerning the size of the tourist accommodation as well as...
THE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE ROMANIAN TOURISM – A GHOST OR SUSTAINABLE REALITY?
Annals of Faculty of Economics, 2009
The integration of Romanian tourism into the European Union means making the economic activity more efficient in concordance with the natural and social environment. The tourism has the chance to develop freely without constraint from the limits imposed by the decision factors, as it happened in the cases of the agriculture and industry. The reduced competitiveness of the Romanian tourism in comparison with the member states of the European Union, even the new integrated states, can be improved through the adoption of a strategy which could establish very clearly the priorities towards which they would direct the financial resources allotted by the EU or by the state budget for the period 2007-2013.
The competitiveness of tourism in Romania after EU accession: Regional analysis
Ekonomika poljoprivrede
Tourism is dependent on the existence of natural and antrophic resources. Because Romania is characterized by great variety and diversity of these type of resources, we want to study the evolution and attractiveness of tourism and how it was influenced by the EU accession. The analysis is focused on two important touristic regions of Romania, namely Nord-Est and Sud-Est. For this approach, we use the comparative analysis, in dynamics, of the main indicators used in tourism activity, based on statistical data at regional and national level. The results of the analysis will highlight the potential and attractiveness of tourism and the advantages of Romania's EU membership.
Indicators of competitiveness in tourism: Case of Serbia, Montenegro and FYR Macedonia
2016
The competitiveness of tourist destinations is a phenomenon of 21st century. Comparative advantage of destinations on the market is determined by factors of production i.e. natural (inherited) and created (infrastructure). In the paper is carried out a comparative analysis of the countries of the former Yugoslavia, the candidates of the European Union, Serbia, Montenegro and FYR Macedonia. For monitoring the competitiveness it was used a model that has been developed by The World Economic Forum for the purpose of Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI). The model covers 14 key indicators based on data from numerous national and international institutions such as World Tourism Organization (UNWTO),
