Interoperability models in digital libraries: an overview

Purpose–The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the existing interoperability models in digital libraries and to introduce related projects in each model. Design/methodology/approach–The study starts from searching various databases with a combination of important keywords in the field, such as interoperability, digital library, meta-searching and cross-searching. The study follows up with describing related digital library projects in the field of technical interoperability.

This study aims to find out models implementation of the technical interoperability applied and developed on the Digital Library Applications of the Library and Archive Analysis System version 1.0 (LARAS v 1.0) by the Center for Scientific Documentation and Information-Indonesian Institute of Sciences (PDII-LIPI). The other goal of this study is to determine why PDII-LIPI tries to develop LARAS v 1.0 and has changed the previous application of WINISIS. This study was done by using a case study method with qualitative approach. Data was collected by documents analyses and in-depth interviews. This result of the study shows that LARAS v 1.0 was created by developers at PDII-LIPI to avoid the obsolescence of information and technology communication (ITC), in this case, is the digital library application. In fact, the conflicts between the developers and the librarians in developing LARAS v 1.0 still exist. Models implementation of technical interoperability applied to LARAS is a combination of several levels of Level of Information System Interoperability (LISI) model. Nevertheless, in practice, LARAS v 1.0 is still not perfect, especially from the point of view of system development of metadata, encoding, communication protocol, databases, and indexing. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui model implementasi interoperabilitas teknis yang diterapkan dan dikembangkan pada aplikasi perpustakaan digital Library and Archive Analysis System versi 1.0 (LARAS v 1.0) oleh Pusat Dokumentasi dan Informasi Ilmiah-Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (PDII-LIPI). Tujuan lain dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan mengapa PDII-LIPI mencoba mengembangkan LARAS v 1.0 dan telah mengubah aplikasi WINISIS sebelumnya. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode studi kasus dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan analisis dokumen dan wawancara mendalam. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa LARAS v 1.0 dibuat oleh pengembang di PDII-LIPI untuk menghindari usangnya teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (TIK), dalam hal ini, adalah aplikasi perpustakaan digital. Bahkan, konflik antara pengembang dan pustakawan dalam mengembangkan LARAS v 1.0 masih ada. Model implementasi interoperabilitas teknis yang diterapkan pada LARAS merupakan kombinasi dari beberapa level model Level of Information System Interoperability (LISI). Namun demikian, dalam praktiknya, LARAS v 1.0 masih belum sempurna, terutama dari sudut pandang pengembangan sistem metadata, pengkodean, protokol komunikasi, database, dan pengindeksan.

Technological forces have and continue to change the global economy and the way of life in organizations and the world. The Internet and associated technologies have spurred evolutionary in traditional library, therefore digital library systems are being built in libraries. In addition, information retrieval is one of the key components of any digital library where it is the most fascinating and challenging area. Currently, digital libraries are widely disseminated over the Internet which allows users to send similar query for each digital library system separately and this is very cumbersome to the users. As such, it is desirable to provide a mechanism to foster interoperability between digital libraries. This mechanism would allow users to conduct searching across all systems with just one query. The paper explains issues that facilitate interoperability of digital libraries using semantic approach utilizing metadata. It would aid in developing semantic digital library as digital collections are made shareable among all education practitioners.

COMPARISON OF USED METADATA ELEMENTS IN DIGITAL LIBRARIES IN IRAN WITH DUBLIN CORE STANDARD

Introduction: Internet and Wide World Web development, as well as the increasing content of electronic information resources in the web environment has created many challenges front of organizers and managers of information. One of the fundamental challenges is how to manage electronic resources to increase their accessibilities, to increase recall and precision. A new way that in recent years has been created for encounter with this problem is metadata. The most important environments that can use from metadata are digital libraries (DLs). Because of rapid development of DLs in Iran and organization and management importance of resources in these libraries, in this research has been paid to investigation of usage of metadata elements in DLs in Iran and their adaptation rate with Dublin Core standard. Method: This research is survival descriptive research. First used metadata elements has been determinate in DLs in Iran and then has been paid to adaptation rate of used metadata elements in eight DLs in Iran with Dublin Core standard using of a check list. Findings: Findings of research showed none of DLs in Iran have not used from special metadata schema like Dublin Core and etc. But this research showed 100 percent of libraries have used from general metadata elements (HTML metatags). “Omid-e Iran “DL using 7 elements is in first rank and “DID” DL using 1 element is in last rank. Result: Findings denote used metadata elements are limited to html metatags that in between these elements a few number are adaptation with Dublin Core elements. We hope managers and designers of DLs study researches and step impressively for more standardization of DLs in Iran.
Paving the Way for Interoperability in Digital Libraries: The DL.org Project

While Digital Libraries are working towards making universally accessible collections of human knowledge a reality, considerable advances are needed in Digital Libraries methodologies and technologies to make this happen. Achieving interoperability between Digital Libraries is a crucial requirement for reaching this goal. Interoperability is a multi-layered and context-specific concept. It encompasses different levels along a multidimensional spectrum ranging from organisational to technological aspects. Addressing the interoperability challenges is the prime goal of the DL.org project. DL.org is advancing the state of the art in this area, and is proposing solutions for interoperability in addition to best practices and shared standards, bringing together knowledge from the DELOS project and expertise of Digital Library stakeholders. To achieve its objectives, the project is looking at the DELOS Digital Library Reference Model and investigating interoperability from the viewpoint of the six fundamental Digital Library concepts: Content, User, Functionality, Quality, Policy, and Architecture. Our paper describes the results of DL.org research, and how the project is addressing the interoperability challenge from the perspectives of the six domains. Relevant Digital Library interoperability aspects will be described, from conceptualisation at a high organisational level to instantiation at process level, and modelling techniques for representing and enabling interoperability between heterogeneous digital library mediation approaches, methods, and systems. By pursuing the interoperability goal, DL.org is paving the way forward for embedding new research achievements into real-world systems, and is supporting the advancement of research and the creation of a European Information Space for the knowledge-based economy.
The Integrating library system ILS (Koha) and Digital Library-DL (Dspace) mix problem (ILS-DL) belongs to the class of digital and integrated library system and is considered as one of the most difficult problems integrating them together. The project is seeking to find the minimum cost for integrating a library system and digital library together as one system to provide complete solution for library along with integrating vufind discovery tool with both the system and proving the search result from different databases. The problem has many applications in real-life. There is no known exact system for solving this problem in polynomial time and even small instances may require long computation time i.e. each open source can be integrated separately. Therefore, we have to go by integrating different open source for example Koha, Dspace and Vufind for solving the problem, and genetic algorithm is one of the best heuristic algorithms for solving combinatorial optimization problem for combining them together. We seek heuristic solution to the ILS-DL. So, we shall develop a system to obtain heuristic solution to the problem. Then compare the efficiency of our proposed solution with existing state-of-art available system for the problem by solving some known instances and randomly generated instances of various sizes. Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) is offered as a balancing solution to meet librarians' objectives without giving up excellence. The endeavor of this research is to confirm not only the most used FOSS in Libraries but also those alternatives which are not as glowing known but with great possible for the community. Computers and computer networks are being used in libraries for almost three to four decades now. Libraries all over the world are in the steady business of providing their patrons growing as well as legacy information in an extraordinary array of content categories or publication types, and in a fast proliferating merge of formats (digital as well as print). In the modern practical library setting there is a remarkable saturation of digital information during a diversity of publication forms such as books (published as such or issued as supplement), journals, portals, vortals, reports, CBTs, WBTs, cases, databases etc. unquestionably it is necessary to have a robust and flexible digital collections management and appearance software for creating the frequent indexes the libraries need, and for creating and distributing digital collections. Creation of indexes and the protection of digital objects are presently familiarly tied to software that provides those objects.
The goal of this study is describe how public libraries in Iranian cultural centers use of information technologies to developing its services. In this research paper, a structured questionnaire was used to collect data in 80 public libraries. Descriptive statistics method and Excel 2007 was used to analyzed data. In this study, libraries used of exit information technology in acceptable range but use of nonprinted resources such as electronic and digital are weakness and only 12.5 percent of libraries contain this material. Librarian's skills are suitable for used of IT in public and technical services but users need to necessary training for use of this facilities. The results of the present study show that information technologies facilities of all public libraries affiliated to the Art and Cultural Organization of Tehran Municipality are in desirable condition. Librarians and administrators also have full satisfaction of their libraries being equipped with new technologies. The interesting point in this context is to conform the nature and form of the provision of services in public libraries to the needs of users in different categories of sex, age and education.
